Creature Collection Revised Opinions?

I'll swing by and help Nightfall out. I've got CCRev and it has a lot of neat stuff to it. Is it worth the sticker price if you already have CC1... maybe not. Especially if you are short on funds and you don't mind picking up the errata on the website. However, CCRev really is much more then CC1 with the errata. CC1 was a book truly deserving of a revision and 3.5 coming out certainly made it a great time to do one. All the monsters (save for the Herald of Vangal and Drendari which show up in Div&Def, and exemplars which will show in a future Player's Guide) have been updated in 3.5 format (with descriptive text, formatting, all that jazz). The truly questionable art (much of Guy Davis' work... don't get me wrong, he's got good work, just not appropriate for a fantasy setting.) has been redone with better art. Those creature that really needed to be templates now are (and much of the truly new stuff can be found there). And several "broken" creatures have been fixed rather nice (like the Feral.) Also there is a section on PC races in the back which is completely new.

So, for a new GM for the Scarred Lands this book is a must buy, even more important IMO then CC2. If you've been keeping up with S&SS material, maybe this might want to be pushed back till after all the Player's Guides come out which, I think, have more bang for your buck. However, if you are looking for a good monster book for whatever setting, CCRev is now once again a good monster book to get. IMO CC1 ceased to be a while ago (in lieu of CC2).

Hope this helps,

Werner Hager

Always Werner! :) Btw I will say make sure to pick up PG: Fighters and Barbarians. It's a great book. Same is true for PG: Paladins and Monks.

no visual is a good visual in this case. now its morphed to include the platform shoes complete with live goldfish . . . make the bad man stop!!!

don't get me wrong here you definately ARE pimpin' the Scarred Lands. I'm just dissin' the visual that pimp-daddy evokes for me.:D

Of course, I've not read too many of the SL setting books that weren't fairly spiffariffic.

Hmmm.... are we reading the same books? ;)

IMO, some of the setting books where good (Hornsaw, Burok Torn, and everyone's favorite Hollowfaust), but I have actually been pretty tepid on many of the setting books.

Nightfall - that "pimp-daddy" thing has got to go. it evokes an image with the elton john glasses an velour top hat that truely is the stuff of nightmares

Psion flashes back to an SNL skit he watched Saturday night...

Well my Scarred Lands campaign is so new it hasn't even started yet. :) I'm not sure when it will start for that matter, but at some point in the future I plan to give it a try. I was going to go with Forgotten Realms as I knew a lot about that setting already and I like it, but then I got to reading some of the backlog of Scarred Lands stuff (you know how you get books that seem interesting and then get other books that seem interesting and more and more gets piled onto the 'to read' pile and...) So now I've recently changed my mind and will go with Scarred Lands instead for a change of pace and I'm really enjoying the setting so far.

In any case, I am planning to be as prepared as possible for starting up something in the SL for whenever the time comes. My latest thoughts on CCR is that I will probably hold off on it for now and catch up on some other books first and then when a time for actually starting a campaign seems more immediate, then will get it at that time. Unless of course I have a lot of trouble converting monsters or something and then the priority may move up!

I'm glad the three "creatures" which got cut are found in other books. I have Divine and Defeated on order already and have plans for the Player's Guides too so will be all set there.

Hmm...for Nightfall specifically...I think I'm in agreement on the Pimp thing. After all, how can we ask you any more questions if you get so loaded down by all of your gold chains that you suffocate or something? Well unless of course you're Mr. T I would suppose... :)

Creature Collection Revised

I have, I am about halfway through (though I've started, for pcGen reasons, with appendices) and I like it.

The good:
- updated stats,
- they kept the Butcher Spirit in,
- they turned many interesting monsters into templates providing sample template creatures,
- updated Scarred Lands races appendix.

The bad:
- typos,
- lots of white space,
- some templates (see Moon Hag CR and EL adjustements) are not really working.

The ugly:
- some pages are messed up (uneven font & line spacings).

Overall: works for me, contains useful information, improves some things (like adding more power to Half-Elves).

Regards,
Ruemere

hmmm... this sparked my curiosity... any further changes to the SL races? And could you elaborate on the changes?
