Critical Role will continue to use Dungeons & Dragons as the play system for its upcoming campaign, with the cast expanding to three distinct tables consisting of a total of 13 players. Today, Critical Role announced new details about its new campaign, which is set to air on October 4th. The new campaign will feature the full founding cast members as players, alongside several new players. In total, the cast includes Laura Bailey, Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Whitney Moore, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Alexander Ward, and Travis Willingham, with the previously announced Brennan Lee Mulligan serving as GM.

The campaign itself will be run as a "West Marches" style of campaign, with three separate groups of players exploring the world. The groups are divided into gameplay styles, with a combat-focused Soldiers group, a lore/exploration-focused Seekers group, and a intrigue-focused Schemers group. All three groups will explore the world of Araman, created by Mulligan for the campaign.

Perhaps most importantly, Critical Role will not be switching to Daggerheart for the fourth campaign. Instead, they'll be opting for the new 2024 ruleset of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Daggerheart will be represented at Critical Role via the Age of Umbra and "other" Actual Play series, as well as partnerships with other Actual Play troupes.

The D&D vs Daggerheart narrative is tired. Maybe this gives an excuse to drop it for a while?
For real! People somehow bought the idea that Darringtong and Daggerheart were somehow taking the fight against WotC and with CP and JC moving to Darrington it was sign that they were somehow enemies or rivals?

Some people are definitely having a normal one about it and it's kinda sad to see.

I'm all for the anticorporate speech but Hasbro is not ExxonMobil xD

This would be like the CEO of Apple using a samsung phone as their main phone, and when asked "oh I still use my iphone for my email checking all the time....I just the samsung for the majority of my apps".

Daggerheart was promoted to be a more narrative focused type of dnd like RPG that would let the CR people play the way they like to play. If they are not willing to use it for their flagship product....it is really hard to stay supportive when the people who get paid for the product aren't even using it.

You can argue a million different reasons why they are going to stay on dnd over DH for this campaign....but man that's got to be a blow to the DH fanbase.

People that are going to turn 180 and abandon DH because CR isn't using it were never actually interested in the game as a game anyway.

It's not. Daggerheart or Candela Obscura are not the main product of Critical Role, they're just side business, part of the merchandise. The streaming shows are the main product. It is like complaining that they sometimes use socks other than their branded Critical Role merchandise socks.

I would have totally watched a Daggerheart campaign 4, but I'm totally fine with them using D&D and a West Marches campaign sounds awesome!

All that being said, I think this displays a lack of confidence in Daggerheart, even if it is just perceived, and I think it will hurt the game in the long run.

Well it would be like that, if Apple had historically been most well known for creating apps for Samsung phones, if tech industry rivalries were as collegial as ttrpg publisher ones, if Apple were a small-cap, privately held company, and if consumers relationship with Apple was defined by their many hours watching livestreams of Tim Apple play with his Samsung phone.
