Critical Role will continue to use Dungeons & Dragons as the play system for its upcoming campaign, with the cast expanding to three distinct tables consisting of a total of 13 players. Today, Critical Role announced new details about its new campaign, which is set to air on October 4th. The new campaign will feature the full founding cast members as players, alongside several new players. In total, the cast includes Laura Bailey, Luis Carazo, Robbie Daymond, Aabria Iyengar, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Whitney Moore, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Alexander Ward, and Travis Willingham, with the previously announced Brennan Lee Mulligan serving as GM.

The campaign itself will be run as a "West Marches" style of campaign, with three separate groups of players exploring the world. The groups are divided into gameplay styles, with a combat-focused Soldiers group, a lore/exploration-focused Seekers group, and a intrigue-focused Schemers group. All three groups will explore the world of Araman, created by Mulligan for the campaign.

Perhaps most importantly, Critical Role will not be switching to Daggerheart for the fourth campaign. Instead, they'll be opting for the new 2024 ruleset of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Daggerheart will be represented at Critical Role via the Age of Umbra and "other" Actual Play series, as well as partnerships with other Actual Play troupes.

Joking aside, I am surprised Hasbro never just bought CR.

They've never bought out competition that I know of. Other than DndBeyond (I've always assumed that being bought out was always the goal of the people behind DndBeyond), have they ever bought another company? Besides, how would that work and why would they? They couldn't force any of the people involved to continue working for them.

Edit: Let me ask you this - what is Professor DM’s source of data for the statement “Brendan Lee Mulligan will buy a house in LA, a Ferrari, or a small island in the Caribbean for the amount he was paid to Gamemaster this season?”
If RPG money can purchase a small Caribbean island . . . that's pretty awesome! We've come a long way baby! :)

Instead of "D&D in a Castle" . . . Mulligan is going to build a Caribbean RPG resort! Take my money!

They bought some game developer shops, I presume to work on Sigil, but we see how that turned out.

I didn't know that but as you said it wasn't exactly successful.

I was thinking more along the lines of how Taco Bell long ago bought out my favorite Mexican fast food chain (they were a local chain with a similar model to Chipotle) only to shut them down.

As if he wouldn't funnel it into an RPG summer camp so more kids could afford to go. Possibly with a grown-up version too.

"D&D in a Castle" seems like a good gig if you can get it, and people who can afford it clearly don't struggle for money to throw at it. But I have a feeling Brennan has private opinions about the endeavour.

I'm sure the Brennan is being paid for the gig, he should be. But the idea that any one individual on the show is getting that much money for a single season almost puts this in the realm of comedic parody for me.
one season is 2 to 2.5 years, that is plenty of time to earn some money. Maybe not Caribbean island money (for most islands worth buying), but Ferrari, why not…

I think we have to take them at their word and not some giant conspiracy

As Matt said he’s being pulled in multiple directions and the prepping of a new world with 3 plus hours of content every week is a lot. They have backup gms and Brennan has had this idea for probably over a year (maybe longer)

The 2 wotc people we brought in to help with daggerheart and my guess d&d . I don’t believe that this was a fly by your seat operation

You have people now who have young children. Children have activities and homework and this west marches works perfectly for them

On the pay part? Does everyone realize that they all get paid for this? The Australian show and autographs etc etc is easy money. Brennan is smart along with now some other voice actors as it’s an easy gig
Off topic I was just at a comic book convention thing where John cena and Hayden Christensen etc etc where there. They fly out 1 day probably all expenses paid as they are the attraction and then make 5-10 grand plus for a day of signing their name/photos etc
I personally think the d&d stuff goes on forever r another year after this as u don’t know if daggerheart works for big groups like this with the new mechanics
