Crossover Gamers - Do They Exist And Where Is The Data?

I guess I'm a "crossover gamer". I went from Baldur's Gate II to Neverwinter Nights, to playing NWN with a DM, to PnP.

But by your definition, every gamer I know is a crossover gamer. They all read LotR and other F&SF before playing D&D, and most of them play computer games.

Nearly all of my gaming friends cross into comics, SF/fantasy lit, video games or anime -- and in many cases, all four areas. (I fit that bill too, although my anime interest is pretty minor.)

Along with gaming, I've always seen those hobbies as being pretty closely related, and that theory has been borne out for me by many years of encountering folks who validate it. ;)

As far as actual studies, I've never run into one -- interesting question, though.

I've crossed back and forth in several ways...

When I was a kid, I ate up sci-fi and fantasy but pretty much moved past it by my mid-teens. Then after a coupla years outta the scifi/fantasy loop I got invited to play a DnD campaign a friend was dm'ing. That relit the flame. I played until I went to college, then never found a decent group of gamers again. I remembered the games fondly though.

Fast forward about 17, 18 years. My ex was getting heavily involved with Baldur's Gate, and I eventually became hooked too. I realised rather quickly that it was DnD, and to help understand the game again I rebought all the books. Became utterly addicted to NWN eventually.

The online gaming was cool, but it lacked the atmosphere, conviviality and one:one friendships I knew in DnD. So I started haunting local game shops, and someone put me in touch with a local 'net forum. I posted looking for a game, and lo and behold who should be the first reply? Yeppers, my childhood buddy. So I'm playing again, and the guys and gal directed me here ;p.

Life can be so circular once you have been around a while.

(Edit - Ah yes, I see it now...Disable smilies ;p.)

I too know tons of gamers who were or are comic readers. I was a comic book reader up until about 2003 when my cash flow went into the purchase of a house. In addition, I read sci-fi and fantasy books, play minatures games and did the collectible card thing- mostly Magic, but some others. I know many gamers who came to D&D through fantasy and comic book reading.

edit: Oh yeah, I also play a ton of computer and console games, and board games. No wonder I have no spare time.

I actually only know a small handful of people who play RPGs currently or in the past. Of them, all of them read comics, read fantasy and sci-fi novels, play board games a lot, and waste many hours in front of video games randing from Mario World 2 to Halo. Then again, maybe we're just a bunch of nerds, but oh well.
