CRPG Games?

You can download a Playstation emulator (epsxemu for example) and buy Final Fantasy IX. It takes a bit of work to make it function properly, but it's worth it. Once the emulator is properly configured, I've found the game to be perfectly stable. The emulation quality depends heavily on your video card, but you can assume it will be at least as good as the TV. On good cards that are widely supported and thus have good emulator plugins, the graphic output is actually far better than the original. Plus, on an emulated game you can save whenever you want in a fraction of a second instead of using save points. :D

I have to concur. EPSXE is a great emulator, and the games work wonderfully if you tweak the video options enough. I had FFIX running pretty good using just a Celeron 450 with 192 mb RAM and a generic video card. Of course, now that I have an Athlon XP1800, GeForce4 64mb, and 256 mb DDR RAM, it runs as well as it does on the Playstation. :)

I am interested in Wizardry 8. Is it good? What are the requirements? I also found a 5 dollar copy of Age of Wonders (I know it is strategy, but...) and am wondering if it is any good... Help me out if you could.

You can read a full review of Wizardry 8 that I wrote here.

As for other CRPGs, I definitely recommend Morrowind if you have a PC that can handle it (Or an XBox). Look into it if you have at least a P700 and a GeForce2 video card.

If you liked the Fallout series, you may like Arcanum. If you ran Baldur's Gate II, you should be able to run Arcanum.

Do NOT try Pool of Radience 2, unless you like having to reinstall Windows. Even if you get it running, be prepared for a slow game.

It's not a typical RPG, but if you like X-Files/cyberpunk style conspiracy, you'll love Deus Ex. It's basically a CRPG trapped in the body of a first person shooter. Very fun, but still very intelligently made.

Neverwinter Nights will be out in the next week or so. Icewind Dale should be out in a month or 2. The system requirements for these won't be nearly as steep as Morrowind's. The end of the year should bring Lionheart, from the creators of the Fallout series, which looks highly promising.

As a fan of cyberpunk, First Person Shooters, and RPGs, I loved Deus Ex. A similiar Sci-Fi FPS/RPG hybrid that I also enjoyed was System Shock 2. You can usually find both of these titles for fairly cheap these days.

Keep in mind that these games are two (Deus Ex) and three (System Shock 2) years old, so don't expect exceptional graphics. While not necessarily bad, they don't compare to more recent games such as Morrowind. You'd be surprised how much has changed in just a few short years...

As for more recent games, I agree that Morrowind, Icewind Dale 2, and Neverwinter Nights are your best bets. I've heard some rather negative things about Wizardry 8, though. And if you like mindless hack-and-slash RPGs such as Diablo 2, you'll want to take a look at Dungeon Siege.

If you like both RPGs and squad-based tactical games, I recommend Fallout: Tactics. It combines the RPG system and setting of the Fallout series with the gameplay of the X-Com series.

Heh. On a voodoo3 card, I ran it at 1600x1200, with alpha blending. The rendering quality scales well with the resolution, so the 3d elements were actually noticeably better than on the Playstation (which runs at the very poor TV resolution)!

Wizardry8=Best.Game.Ever. Maybe not, but it is *among* the best. You can read me gushing about it at: http://pub115.ezboard.com/fnutkinlandfrm21.showMessage?topicID=1047.topic

Which is exactly why I wrote this in my review...
... ruined the game for me, but it would be completely unfair for me to say that it’s unplayable. Too many people think differently and Sir-Tech does deserve congratulations for that. I’d suggest reading other reviews and if the high points that they mention appear to outweigh the negatives that I gave here, then by all means try it out. My own personal recommendation would be to pass this one by though.

(You've gotta read the review to find out exactly what I thought ruined the game for me... gotta hype the site any way I can y'know :))

Obviously I disagree with you that it's the best game ever, but your review did a good job of pointing out what you consider to be some of the strengths of the game. I'm glad someone got some enjoyment out of it. :)

Edit: Woohoo! Just noticed that this is my 100th post :))

Tboarder: your link didn't work, the site didn't load... :(

Just my luck... the moment I start hyping the site up here and it goes down. :( I'll see what the problem is as soon as I can. Thanks for checking though. :)

****WARNING!!! SPOILERS FOR WIZARDRY 8 INCLUDED!!!***

Tboarder: ah, now I kind of understand where you are coming from. We must agree to disagree, though - what you hated in the game is, to an extent, what I loved. On to the specific points:

-One of the points where the game may indeed fail, is that it isn't a game for the mainstream (not in the condescending sense, just that - people who aren't Wiz fans), and your review points out how a more mainstream reviewer might look at the whole game. Wizardry isn't one of these games, like Baldur's Gate or Might&Magic. Hell, Parts II-IV had stickers on their boxes that said: "Experience with Wizardry I required." You mentioned that you met NPCs and plot elements who recognized you, but you didn't meet them before - well, these are from Part VII, or even VI (Bela). The designers could have implemented this better, I agree. Myself? Oh, my characters were started in VI, transferred to VII and finally to VII, giving me a completely different perspective and some cool weapons to start with. Which brings us to...

-Oh no, the game is too hard! Yes, it is, and it might come as a shock after more... contemporary games. Wizardry games are notoriously hard. Wizardry IV (The Return of Werdna) is often touted as the hardest CRPG ever (out of 40 playtesters, only four completed it - as for me, I got to the Master ending without a walkthrough - one of my proudest moments in computer gaming. :D ). VIII. follows this tradition. But I still don't think it is too hard. You mentioned your character were often afflicted with nausea, poison, etc. Did you cast "buff" spells like Armorplate, Enchanted Blade, Magic Screen, Missile Shield and the various in-combat magics like Bless or (in some cases) Element Shield? These are very important for your survival. It also means that, as in D&D, it is a good thing to start at least one Cleric and someone with Wizard magic. :)
Also, you can surprise opponents before they do the same to you - just wait until they get close (hide behind a corner) and push the sword. Now move out (when they are still unaware) and you get some free action. Likewise, you can [...should] use the terrain to your advantage. Getting familiar with spells and items can help alot (Potions of Superman or the spell for hard battles).
Of course, the game will still be hard (on expert, especially - of course, Real Men use expert, maybe even Iron Man. :D ). This isn't a bug, it is a feature, which I appreciate among the zillions of too easy games (BG=no challenge at all, plus lousy story). Back in the good old days, all CRPGs were like this.
The only problem with combat was the slow speed of monsters, but there is an user patch for this. [Of course, including it in your review would hve been cheating - it could have been done by Sir-Tech, but they were murdered most foully by the time the game came out...]

-The Mythology increase is damn annoying when it comes one at a time. Ack.

-Bats, insects and alligators: never had any problem with that. YMMV. :) The only monsters I really hate are the Rynjin, some Unicorns and the Psi-Sharks. Those are scum. Once again, it is back to the old days of Crusaders of the Dark Savant, where some monsters were only defeatable after multiple attempts and with incredible luck (*Fiend of Nine Worlds* & *Beast of 1000 Eyes* being the worst).

-The blending of futuristic elements and fantasy: don't agree, don't agree, don't agree. I love , no, adore it. I also think it is more seamless than in the Might and Magic series and accompanied by a better game than Final Fantasy (accck, that one was too painful for me). What can I say? I love giant robots, spaceships and the like mixed with swords&sorcery. But it may be my weird tastes kicking in. :) I also love the alien races (the T'Rang were more menacing) and the story - not as good as Wizardry VII, but definitely fun.

In closing, your review was probably good from a mainstream viewpoint and didn't wander into the "This sucks 'cause it sucks and if I say so it sucks." trap. From the POV of a Wizardry fanatic (me and countless others), it is harder to understand. Because, let us face it, this is the game we have been waiting for and we got what we wanted from it - nothing more and nothing less. And, unfortunately, it might be the last treat for us grognards. :(
