Current State of Neverwinter Nights?

DJ, that in there character creator... Vice nice program. :)

I would agree with what you've heard from others... :) NWN is better than it has been. I would like to see one more Expansion pack with savage species but looking at the file structure, mainly the dialog.tlk it would be allot of work and isn't likely.

Duncan Haldane, can you tell me more about this persistent world concept?

Also I see people responding in this thread that aren't in the ENworld Guide... I'm shocked, stunned and a tad bit disappointed... ;) Linkage

A persistent world is one where your characters are stored on that server, and you grow your characters over time.

Hmm, I don't know that that says much.

In the world I play in, we don't have any DM-run modules. We have a world, with cities, caves, dungeons, monsters, undead, etc. You go around and fight things. There are some quests, but not enough *g*. There are even alignment-based quests, ie, I have an evil character who has taken on evil quests.

We have a tradeskill system, as I mentioned, that is based on Mojo's Ambrosia Tradeskill System (ATS). You can spend your time making things and selling them without ever facing a monster, but to get the better components, you usually need to fight for them.

I've played a few modules, which are interesting, but have a definate start and finished. Persistent Worlds (listed in gamespy as PW Action and PW Story) don't have starts and ends so much (it can be annoying that you can never actually clear out a cave, but I am looking at making some permanent changes to areas to reflect this).

I hope that explains it, but feel free to ask more questions!

That helped out allots. :) So is it invitation only or what? Do you adventure only in-groups or can you do it by yourself? I imagine that if the game is persistent sometimes you can be online basically by yourself correct?

Here is a list of Neverwinter Nights modules that, IMO, are the cream of the crop. I've provided links to where you can download the modules, but please be aware that many of these modules have additional files that must be downloaded (such as hack packs or movies). Information on these additional files can be found in the links.

You are correct, you adventure by yourself or with others depending on who is around. I have a number of characters, and will look to see who is on before I choose which to play - the party has to be within 5 levels of each other to avoid XP penalties for those outside the limits.

There are invitation-only worlds, and open worlds.

When you start NWN choose multiplayer, then choose internet. You will be shown available worlds you can play in. Persistent worlds are listed under PW Story and PW Action.

The world I play in is under PW Action, and it's listed as Limeworld, but since most of the players are in Australia or Europe, it will often be empty during prime US hours.

Talk to Lazybones...

ENWorlder Lazybones DMs NWN modules on a pretty regular basis (and is a highly rated DM on one of the NWN sites mentioned above...look him up on the boards and pick his brain a bit.

I used to laugh at people who played Evercrack...but it is pretty easy to get sucked into a good PW (persistant world). I have played in about 7-8 different PWs and currently play Narfell (http://nwn.black-flag.com/), a pretty role-playing intensive and very tough PW. It uses the optional HCR (hard-core rules) rule set and is much closer to true D&D (IMO) than most PWs out there. Tough to get a PC past the first couple of levels, but very rewarding once you do. You only need the original NWN game to play it...no need to buy either expansion yet (many PWs require one or both expansions to play).

The sites mentioned above are definitely worth visiting.

~ Old One

PS - If you ever make it to Narfell, look up Arashika Skar, half-orc warrioress extraordinaire ;)

Does anyone know if there are plans for a Neverwinter Gold?

I've held off buying the expansions and just plan on getting the "Complete" program whenever that should happen.

It's out already. That's all I know.

Someone above mentioned Neverwinter Connections (www.neverwinterconnections.com), but I'd like to elaborate on it, since I've been a member there now ever since the original game came out.

NWC is a free service that offers a variety of matchmaking services for DMs and players. There's an active forum, a mentor service for new members, search tools to help you find a game in the time slot you desire, and a variety of other features. If you don't mind scheduling your game time a few days in advance, you'll find a variety of one-shot games, ongoing campaigns, even persistent world events scheduled. I myself run two campaigns that play two hours a week; a few of my players have been gaming with me since July of 2002. The site's game postings are also cross-posted to Neverwinter Vault and have just been added to the Bioware main site as well. NWC also hosts NWCon, an online NWN gaming event that features various scheduled chats (at the last one we had a chat with several Bioware folks participating), special seminars, prize drawings (Bioware merchandise, I got a cool hat and mug from the last one), and of course tons of games. NWCon2 is scheduled for April and we're already well into the planning on the NWC Forums. There's also a DM101 program designed to help new players become DMs, and a Guide that myself and other folks put together to serve as a basic outline to NWN DMing (http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1066783952107.shtml).

Best of all, it's a cool community... not quite as big as ENWorld, but we've got hundreds of active members and over 10,000 total registered, last time I checked.

If you have any questions about the site, feel free to send me a PM... I'm Lazybones over there as well.
