Custom character sheets

I've drafted my own in MS Word, even though we don't use many house rules. I've made it easy for me to follow, and cut out a lot of clutter that I don't feel normally need to be on a sheet. I also use it for many convention games, but haven't really thought to get feedback on the character sheet and find out how easy or hard it really is for other people.

I'll have to check that out, thanks for the tip. How user-friendly is it?
Not overly so, I'd have to say. :\ Plus, it tends to be a bit ah. . . pricey. Generally.

So, not so much a tip, perhaps, as an anecdote. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. :heh: Just saying what's worked for me, is all.

At times, I found MS Word to be OK though, and OpenOffice for that matter (a free, open source alternative to MS Office). If I didn't personally prefer InDesign, I'd most likely have continued to use one or both. Very nice stuff can be produced with either one.

Well, everything with Adobe is pricey. :) I actually downloaded the demo for InDesign, but after doing some research I've found an open source program called Scribus, which I'm in the process of downloading and installing right now.

Excel can also make very effective sheets, and can even do some calculations for you - without extensive programming skill.

I use the Mad Irishman's character forms. I tend to avoid House Rules, and especially House Rules that won't play nicely with that form.

All characters in my campaigns use the same style of form. Partly, this is because I maintain and digitise the character sheets for all characters as the campaign goes on. The other reason is that a common format makes it easy for people to help one another locate whatever is needed on the form, should that become a necessity (and, not incidentally, I can see all the working when I need to).

I do my own in MSWord and save as editable pdfs if needed. Print it out with a laser printer on light card stock (20 or 24 lb paper) to withstand erasures.
