D&D 2 Movie Preview at Gen Con!

I can't believe how forgiving so many of you are for the first movie. D&D fans seem to get the bottom scrapings of everything, our software is poorly coded, our 30th anniversary book is atrociously written, our movies are awful, and yet so many of you can't wait to strap yourselves in for another two hours of knife twisting. I salute you, brave people, and I would like to sell you official D&D bottled water.

Are you kidding? Its about a 15 to 1 negative over praise... and the praise has been modest while the negatives are frequently rabid.

While I do think the first was a near atrocity of film-making, I am not going to hold it against this new one after knowing that nearly everything that links it to the first movie has been broken. The name "Dungeons & Dragons" and Bruce Payne being about the only thing carried over from the first movie... or is it just that folks can't get their thinking past it being called a sequel?

It rightly can be called a whole new, clean attempt at doing a D&D movie. Maybe it really shouldn't be called a sequel after all. Take out the "2" from the title. Just a proposal, maybe someone who goes to the screening could suggest it to the Warner Brothers marketing folks... IMO, it could only help. :)

Once the movie world has something to mimic, the apes in H-wood can at least mimic human action. :)

The D&D movie was fun. Its a good romp through what feels like a real play session.
I 100% agree with that. The first DnD movie wasn't meant to be LotR. LotR is about a heroic fantasy story; D&D movie is about DnD, and as such perfectly reflects it. All the idiotic things that happen in the the movie are perfect reflections of the clichés we used in the game.

My guess is that people hate the movie because they don't want to accept the truth about their games. ;)

Long ago, when I was young and played AD&D 1e, a (French) film-maker came to obseve one of our gaming sessions, as he planned to do a (TV) film about the game. He intended to do a film where gamers who play too much RPGs eventually turn into murder, sect, and what not. BUT THEN, our gaming session that day was so inept and silly that he quickly forgot about the idea! :D

What I mean with that anecdote, is that when seen by outside observers who are not gamers themselves: 1) D&D sucks; 2) As such it's perfect to ruin our "respectability".

Too bad it didn't work out; I actually would love to see a real occult thriller/slasher flick about my favorite game ... you know, like Mazes & Monsters, but more scary ....

People who want to see a "real" DnD movie should check out Record of Lodoss War. Apparently the folks who wrote it based the whole thing on their OD&D campaign. And, there's two flavours... the original, and the mini-series.

But anyhoo... anyone wanna push for a Temple of Elemental Evil movie, minus the massive dungeon areas? :) Or how about a Shackled City trilogy?

The original D&D movie angered me in so many ways, much like the original Final Fantasy movie did... neither seemed to have anything to do with the source material from which they were created. While you can throw a dragon in a D&D movie and you can mention spirituality in the Final Fantasy one, fans were looking for key elements that related to the games they came from, and both films were found lacking.

That said, I enjoy watcing Sinbad, Hercules, and Xena much more than the D&D movie. I saw it once... I have never seen it again.
