[D&D 3.5] Masterwork Craft rules

Where do you think this balance works best? Do you like the current rules? They certainly seem mechanically sound to me, if aesthetically displeasing.

I think the rules are okay as they are. Sure, they're not super-realistic, but they're easy to use. The same is true for a lot of the D&D rules, not just the ones concerning masterwork items. To me, that's just fine. I don't want my gameplay slowed down because I have to study the fine print of an endless list of rules all the time.

On a side note, I'm not sure pottery and weaponsmithing are two easily compared crafts, Kenjib...

Why not? It seems to me that a person who can make a very high quality item will do so fairly consistentely due to talent, experience, and technique, not by spending 100 times (variable) as much time and money making the item. I only chose pottery because the tools in use today are the same as tools in use in the past and because I know a little (minimal, granted) bit about it. Do you know anything about traditional smithing? I see no reason why the same principle wouldn't apply.
