...none of MY clones have ever carped on about rules being the death of imagination. Now TOM CASHEL'S clones, on the other hand, you may want to speak with.

Nobody forced you to read all that "carping." What was that about having too much time on one's hands...?

Note that this thread has spawned it's own clone...an evil anti-clone with an inverted thread title.

Reply from the "3E Promotes Imagination" Thread

(I was replying to Henry's question when the thread got locked...)

TOM - what I would like to know is why you consider 3E a "creativity challenged" game, when you yourself have seen the sheer number of powerfully original idea threads, story hours, and house rules discussions that go on here? Do you believe that creativity is truly defined by making up game rules on the fly, as you seem to be asserting?

Henry, thanks for asking.

What I think is that, for me, the 3E rules-set gets in the way of role-playing and story. To use the local lingo, the "crunch" outweighs the "fluff." To be honest, I'm torn...because RPG rules need to be self-consistent and logical. On the other hand, so many of my recent 3E game sessions have broken down into rules debates, rules consultations, etc. that it has (to some extent) spoiled my enjoyment of those sessions.

I don't think I would define "creativity" as making up rules on the fly. Mine was one of those long-running story hours! :) But it would certainly give the DM more to do than look up rules.

As was established in that other thread [this thread], a lot of my problem has to do with my players, myself, the rules, and the way we all interact. I wanted ideas on how I could make it work for us! Contrary to those people whose idea is for me to just "go away" and "play something else," I like D&D. My players like D&D, and they like their 10th level characters that they've been playing for so long. I got some ideas. We're going to try them out at our next scheduled D&D 3E session on April 5th.

Here now!

Hey Tom,

First off I think I might have given you the wrong impression.

I was niether being a smartass, nor was I trying to flame you.

When I said to look for your answers elsewhere I was NOT telling you to go away. All I was saying was merely that. You aren't going to find what your looking for here. At least thats my opinion, judging by what others are saying. And it seems that you may be losing (or not getting what your looking for) the argument that you started and are now just arguing for the sake of sake of it.

Hey I could be wrong here. Its not unheard of. :)

Oh and by the way, I assume that your frustration level is escalating because that reaaalllly immature comment on my handle was totally uncalled for.

Losing? Frustration? Won't find what I'm looking for?

It's amazing how much of what one reads on a messageboard is in their own mind, Encephalitis.

Allow me to quote myself:

Ok then. Maturity level dropping. Stupid level rising. Frankly you're an :):):):):):):). :D :D :D

Now begone TROLL!!!

Again I would have to say that 3rd ed offers everything prior editions had plus balance and a good game. There is nothing stopping you from using house rules and completly ignoring the consequences, relying on the inane fudging that was oh so common in earlier versions and many of today's rules light systems, as I'm sure many groups actually do.

And again I would have to agree with hong. This sounds like the carping of an egocentric dm who is so narrow in his thinking that everything published has to validate his ideal of the game. How ironic. :)

Oh no, I'm cool. Once the personal attacks come, like name calling etc. I recognize the inner idiot, and realize the futility of arguing with stupid people. Good luck! :D

I respect you for giving your "inner idiot" equal time, but counter that you won't learn much by labeling people "stupid" and then ignoring them.

wow, i have been gaming for over 2 decades, and i still have yet to start calling people names over it.

relax people, it is a GAME and noone here will get hurt if we are all just respectful :)
