Reply from the "3E Promotes Imagination" Thread

TOM - what I would like to know is why you consider 3E a "creativity challenged" game, when you yourself have seen the sheer number of powerfully original idea threads, story hours, and house rules discussions that go on here? Do you believe that creativity is truly defined by making up game rules on the fly, as you seem to be asserting?
Henry, thanks for asking.
What I think is that, for me, the 3E rules-set gets in the way of role-playing and story. To use the local lingo, the "crunch" outweighs the "fluff." To be honest, I'm torn...because RPG rules need to be self-consistent and logical. On the other hand, so many of my recent 3E game sessions have broken down into rules debates, rules consultations, etc. that it has (to some extent) spoiled my enjoyment of those sessions.
I don't think I would define "creativity" as making up rules on the fly. Mine was one of those long-running story hours!

But it would certainly give the DM more to do than look up rules.
As was established in that other thread [this thread], a lot of my problem has to do with my players, myself, the rules, and the way we all interact. I wanted ideas on how I could make it work for us! Contrary to those people whose idea is for me to just "go away" and "play something else," I
like D&D. My players like D&D, and they like their 10th level characters that they've been playing for so long. I got some ideas. We're going to try them out at our next scheduled D&D 3E session on April 5th.
