I must be the only naive one here, cause I think D&D 4e will come out at GenCon 2010, with plenty of warning first.
And by "plenty of warning" they give us a TWO-year notice, not the usual ONE-year notice.

Editions of D&D seem to have about a 10 year shelf-life as near as I can tell.
Which is something WotC is trying to disprove. In their POV, New D&D editions should come out as often as new versions of the same videogame title: every 3 years or so.

Stop already

These 4th edition threads are going to make the people at WotC think that we, the consumers, want a 4th edition sooner rather than later. The speculation is going to end up being a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Well its taking its time to self fulfill.

When they actually start working on it, it will probably take about two years, so I don't think we would see anything before '08-- and if they were working on it, we would probably know by now. Hobby companies are rotten at keeping secrets.

If by 'working on it' you mean 'making notes about what might be nice to put in 4E', I'd be very surprised if that hasn't been going on for at least a couple years now. I'm pretty sure (please correct me if I'm wrong) that Monte Cook said that the 3.5 release was being worked on in some capacity when the 3.0 book was going out the door the first time.

I think a lot of the stuff we've been seeing (especially things like different types of actions, significantly different styles of class abilities, the monster redesign articles) are alpha or beta tests for 4E. It wouldn't surprise me to think that the plethora of prestige classes might not be one gauge of 'what do we include in 4E' as well.

I'd say this post is true to some extent. I wouldn't be surprised to see some mechanics that have been tried out in some of the supplements make it into the core books for 4E, whenever it is released. The last I heard it was scheduled for release on the 32nd of Smarch 2082 but I could be off by a week or two. The lousy Smarch weather may cause some delays!

I would be surprised too. But by working on I meant the actual writing and development. I think somebody would've squealed if there were an actual group of authors engaged in the project.
