[section] Brue forcibly quelled the panic that threatened to well up from her gut. She kept a tight grasp on the torch, afraid to drop it in the water lest it get irreparably wet. Her other hand tightened on the pommel of the longsword. She used her feet to hunt for solid footing and, if she found purchase, widened her stance. Her swordarm went on autopilot to the ready position, and she prepared to strike at the first sign that something might lurk near at hand. "Hello? she called.[/section]
OOC:
Ready an action, attack with the longsword at the first threatening target within five feet to present itself. Brue might elect to attack even if the target is further away than five feet; it'll depend on whether she thinks she has solid footing and the nature of the threat.
Brue assumed a fighting stance in the hope of better defending herself. Unfortunately, given the mysterious darkness, she wasn't prepared for an attack from above and behind. Leathery tentacles whipped around her neck with surprising strength. She tried to cry out only to have what felt like a living sack of leather drop over her head, blinding and suffocating her.
OOC:
The creature's Stealth Check beat Brue's Passive Perception check. As such, she can't take a reaction until after it attacks. Note that both of your hands are occupied. You are currently suffocating. I'm house-ruling this one and stating you can hold your breath for double the normal amount of time once you start suffocating. In Brue's case, that will be for six rounds. If you want to try to remove the thing from your face, you'll have to drop something and make a DC 13 Strength check. If you want to try to attack it with a weapon, you'll have disadvantage on the attack due to both being blinded and the angle of the attack.
[section] Brue dropped the torch but kept hold of the longsword. She snaked up her free hand and started pulling at the tentacles to get the creature off her neck. Air was foremost on her mind; sight could wait for later.[/section]
Brue dropped the torch, presumably dousing it in the water below her. It was difficult to tell, given her eyes and ears were still covered by the disgusting creature. Reaching up with her free hand, she wrenched the creature from her head, allowing her to gasp in air. It was utterly dark, although she couldn't tell if it was due to the dousing of the torch or the mysterious darkness that had heralded the creature's attack.
No sooner had she manage to tear the creature loose that its tentacles were whipping for her neck again, cinching around tightly. The creature once again pulled itself onto her head, smothering her. Aware of the attack, Brue was able to draw a deep breath before the attack.
OOC:
Standard holding breath rules. Brue can hold her breath for 4 minutes and 18 seconds (43 rounds of combat) before she is in danger of dying.
[section] Brue used the longsword and attempted to saw and slice at the top of the creature. She used her free hand to grope at the beast, and hunted for eyes or a similar vulnerability. If she found anything with her free hand, she'd give it a sharp hard poke.[/section]
OOC:
How far away from the nearest wall is Brue? Brue will attack with the longsword (I only know her +3 Str mod, so please tack on or subtract as appropriate if she is proficient with the longsword or has some other unknown ability): [roll0] with [roll1]
Character Sheet Update: Brue is proficient in Martial Weapons and has the Action Surge Class Ability. This means she is at least a 2nd Level Fighter. Which means she also has the Second Wind Class Ability.
Brue attempted to hack at the creature, but the angle made the effort clumsy. Her desperation revealed a previously untapped pool of energy inside of her.
OOC:
Before she was attacked, Brue was close to the western wall to her left. Given the darkness and combat, it would be about a 25% of moving in the right direction (1d4, reach the wall on a 4). I will wait to update the post in the event Brue wants to utilize her newly discovered Action Surge or Second Wind abilities.
