D&D 5E [D&D 5E] Tattered Memories: An Adventure in Tethyr (COMPLETE)

OOC: You can keep the rolls as disadvantage is still in play. Just update your post above, basically saying the creature's tentacles remained tight around your throat and your attack was ineffectual. I'm going to roll for the creature, put an IC for its actions and it will be Brue's turn again, top of the 6th Round.

GM: Round 5
[roll0]
[roll1]
(1d6+3) [9]

Brue: 6/37
Creature: -11/??

The creature tightened its tentacled grip even further. The pain was becoming excruciating; Brue did not think she could take much more of this.

[section] Brue reached down deep and fought hard to regain her strength. Little white lights were starting to pop and blink at the edge of her vision as tentacles continued to tighten about her neck. She kept hold of Greycastle's longsword, but didn't attack and instead reached up with both hands to try to pry the beast off her head and neck. Desperation was starting to set in.[/section]

OOC: OK, I'm ready to use Brue's Inspiration point. I think, at this point, she needs to focus on getting the creature off her head, then getting the heck out of this area, hopefully with the longsword. She'll leave the torch behind if need be. [roll0] to get the beast off her head. Also, as a bonus action, Brue uses Second Wind to regain [roll1] + Brue's fighter level in hit points.

OOC: I think, mechanically, Second Wind could probably be used in Round 5 as a bonus action, but I didn't think to state it until Round 6. I'm easy with however you adjudicate it.

GM: Round 6

Brue: 13/37
Creature: -11/??

Brue reached up at her neck in desperation. Yanking at the creature's tentacles, she managed to rip it free from her head once again with relative ease, although accompanied with a sharp pain. Tossing the creature aside, the genasi gripped the longsword with both hands and waited for the creature to attack again. Focusing on her hearing, the only thing that reached her ears was the sound of her own panting. Has the creature left? she wondered.

OOC: It doesn't really matter which round Second Wind is used, I think it's the only Bonus Action you have (that you know about), so it could have been used in any round. Second Wind puts her up to 13 HP regardless. You said you were going to use Inspiration but didn't, so feel free to retain it for later use. Combat appears to be over.

As an aside, I didn't think that thing was going to kick your ass that badly, but trying to calibrate combat for one character is apparently pretty difficult (not to mention the dice roller was very kind to the creature). Even though it was only CR 1/2, it had all the advantages and Brue had all the disadvantages (literally) in the combat, which ended up being a big deal. I know I need to think through encounters a little more thoroughly in the future.

OOC: I forgot Inspiration granted Advantage. :) I was thinking I'd just describe what I wanted to try to achieve and leave it up to the DM to wing it as to whether the attempt was successful.

[section] Brue felt in the water for the torch. If she could find it, she'd carry it out. If not, well, she was done here. The genasi backed away from the creature until she felt the wall at her back. Keeping the wall's solidity against her spine, she shuffled sideways, out of the darkened area. It was slow going in the dark, with water all around. She kept a tight hold on the longsword, as it was all the stood between her whatever beast it was that had attacked.[/section]

OOC: I don't know that you need to rethink anything. You did a fine job. It's refreshing to get one's hind tail kicked from time to time. And Advantage is, truly, pretty uber. You guys have used it in Stonefast to good effect. It really does seem to make or break an encounter. I think that's why spells like faerie fire are as awesome as they are in this edition?

For now, Brue does nothing other than hunt for the torch and disengage/move away. I was unclear whether the area she was in was dark because of a simple lack of daylight, or because of magical darkness, so I'll look to you for description to help me figure that out.

OOC: Brue has several other torches in the backpack Janelle provided, if she wants to try and light one. Given the fact the light was doused so quickly, she is suspecting magical darkness was the cause of her losing her sight earlier. It was probably caused by the creature.

With the encounter, I just sort of threw it in there since the creature's CR was so low, I thought it would be okay. But once you dropped the torch, there wasn't much you could do. On top of that, the creature rolled ridiculously well for attack rolls, concentration rolls, and damage rolls. In most cases, it didn't need the Advantage, but you having Disadvantage made a huge difference.

[section] Brue reached for another of Janelle's torches and fumbled to light it. She tried to orient herself, then resumed exploring. Hopefully, in a direction away from the tentacle horror.[/section]

Brue carefully removed a torch from the backpack. Quickly running out of hands, she temporarily sheathed the long sword, all the while keeping her ears peeled for the sounds of flapping. Slipping the torch under one armpit, she struck flint to steel and eventually created a spark, catching the fuel soaked rags of the torch alight. Finally, she could see again.

Grabbing hold of the torch, she returned the flint and steel to her belt pouch. Looking around, Brue noticed that she was quite close to the western wall of the underground reservoir. In fact, within a few steps was a decent-sized ledge that would allow her rest on dry ground.

About to unsheathe the longsword, the genasi felt something wet against her neck. Reaching up with her free hand, she drew it back and realized her fingers were covered in blood, most likely hers. She watched as the blood dripped down her fingers, the rivulet snaking around the back of her hand and encircling her wrist. The sight of her wound caused a powerful image to flash across her mind.

Brue breathed the word "Ilmater" and sat back on the ledge, trying to catch her breath.

GM: Character Sheet Update: Brue is a 1st Level Cleric of Ilmater. She has the Life Domain. She currently has no spells prepared, save for Bless and Cure Light Wounds, due to her Domain. Um... up to you about if you want me to reveal what cantrips you know or if you want to just try to pray to Ilmater for stuff and see if it works. I'm playing it a little loose with component requirements at the moment.

OOC: Brue is wise enough to know that she's pretty injured and her resources are tapped. She may want to try to rest now that she's found a place that may allow her to do so.

OOC: Ilmater? Que triste, like, literally.

[section]The force of the memory bore down on Brue, squeezing her chest and stealing her breath. Wheezing in pain, the genasi trudged to the ledge so she could rest. A host of half-forgotten images of reliquary loped through Brue's mind on repeat: a bloody torture rack, a bent and broken man, a woman healed of leprosy, a blind child given back his sight. When she gained the ledge, Brue knelt in prayer. She prayed for healing, for memory, for an end to Mosstone's suffering. "Heal me, O Lord. Heal them all, they cry out in their misery."

Brue whispered in prayer for a long minute, then stood up. It hurt to remember, but it was good, too. She stayed on the ledge, reasoning through what she'd encountered down here in the reservoir. The tentacle thing, I don't know that that thing is the cause of the plague. Probably just some horror of the dark looking to feed, and I happened by. I'd have to have its body to know more, and I'm not fit enough at the moment to fight it off a second time. Best to go rest a bit, hope Ilmater favors me with healing, and try the other direction. Not too long a rest, though. Greycastle needs word soon.[/section]

OOC: So time is of the essence. Originally, I'd planned on Brue being down here for something like half a day. Does the reservoir seem large? How long does Brue think it'll take her to finish checking it out? Her plan for right now is to walk from her present position, heading east (since heading West proved a near catastrophe!). I'll roll for healing later tonight when I get home, or you can roll now if you like. I don't have my book with me and need to look up the Life domain. If you decide to roll (and feel free to do that), please select something that looks like it would put Brue's hp back at around 20 or more.
