I've been thinking about anniversaries recently, while also browsing through some old D&D influenced materials (e.g. StarStone)

For some strange reason the following popped into my mind. I wonder what D&D will be like at 50? (2024 AD). I have no idea, but I sincerely hope people will still be sitting around a table having a good time. :)

Some of us will be retired and playing D&D all day, assuming Alzheimers hasn't ravaged our minds to the point where we completely forget what D&D is. ;)

Let's see... I will be 47 years old.

I have been playing for 21-ish years now, so I would imagine I will still be playing in 14 more. Another contributing factor is that most of my friends play regularly, so there's bound to be a few of them around me then, and I know they will want to ;)

"Who are you?"

"I'm your nurse."

"I'm cold and I don't like you- I attack you with my bastard sword!"

"That was sundered in the last adventure, Mr. Jenkins...play nice, now, and remember the die are not for eating."

I'm in a cynical mood :erm:, so...

Blizzard would have bought over WotC and is promoting D&D as "a great way to play World of Warcraft when you're away from the computer". :uhoh:

But a few months later there is nothing like "away from the computer" anymore. D&D and WoW are completely merged. Only a small resistance group called "Eternal Dungeon Masters" hacks into the system every now and then and performs some "Real Role Playing". Unsuspecting WoW-players are suddenly confronted with NPC who really react to them. Monsters don't respawn, treasures aren't refreshed. A terrible situation which will shortly be solved. :hmm:

Hopefully by then Hasbro will have figured out how to reissue a "classic D&D" whitebox edition of the game (6th printing sans Tolkien reference), but I'm not holding my breath.

Hmm...by that time, D&D will probably be in 7th edition, Pathfinder will just be releasing 3rd edition and TrueFantasy (for all those who have bailed from Pathfinder because it's become "a money grubbing machine") will just be starting up.

And Hasbro will have finally put out the Virtual Table for the XBox 720xTreme (also known as the "xT" - the one that replaced the XBox 720, which replaced the XBox 360). But you have to have a Live account AND a DDI+ account to use it. Unfortunately, you can only use it with the virtual books you register from your MSNook e-reader (because we know MS won't let you import your books from your Apple i-nfinity Amazon app).

A retroclone of 4E D&D and/or 4E Essentials, will probably exist by then too. ;)

The money grubbing multinational corporation which bought up Paizo, changes course with Pathfinder 2E having a completely new design with a closed license. (Paizo's new overlords absolutely hate open gaming licenses and anything to do with d20). :p
