D&D Basic Set (3.5E)

Hmmm, the Black Dragon is one of the very few D&D plastics that I have actually liked. And if I recall properly I have seen it going for 25 dollars as a single on some of the resale sites, have to think about this one...

I wish I had this a few months ago when I was trying to teach my girlfriend to play. Would of saved me a lot of heartache.

A good friend who played while he was in high school has shown interest and we played 2 on-the-fly sessions recently. I will probably pick up this set just so that I can teach him and hopefully any other friends the basics of the game.

Plus, one can never have too many minis, hehe.

I don't think this box is aimed to us advanced guys. It should be designed to draw in new players. I hope it succeeds at that! :)

It's a Medium Black Dragon, the D&D Quick Reference stats tell us that it's a Young Black Dragon (CR 5, HD 10).

Given that, I'd expect the Basic Game to handle levels 1-3.

As to the form of the game, I'd expect it to be similar to the "Adventure Starts Here!" Adventure game that was released for 3E, with one important difference: You can create your own characters.

I may be wrong on that, though. ;)

Cheers!

Hmm, the D&D basic set could be a good way to introduce a few prospective new players I know to the game. I have a couple of friends who have shown interest in D&D, but are afraid of being overwhelmed by the rules. The basic game could be a good way to start them off simple before they start playing with the full ruleset.

MojoGM & I have both the minis already. They are pretty neat. I can't really see a need for it for us, but agree with the posts that this would be good for kids, or other new players to learn.

I think that's the point.

From what I've read about it (remember those GAMA slides I transcribed a while back?), it's a bridge product between boardgames and RPGs, with elements of both. The first couple of scenarios are likely to be very board-game like, but more and more RPG elements are introduced as you go along.

The thing I really hope it does is bring more DMs into the fold. :) The core books are daunting for players... how do you think they are for DMs?

Here's the GAMA quote:

Wizards at GAMA said:
Roleplaying: the D&D Basic Game
* The ideal product to introduce new players to roleplaying
* Gently guides new players from their expectations of a "normal" board game into D&D's more unusual concepts
* Product content, component quality, and price point comparable to mainstream board games
* A no-compromises acquisition product

With the price of D&D Miniatures going up (Booster of 8 miniatures costing $12.99), getting 16 miniatures in this product for $24.99 as well as everything else... an absolute bargain!

Cheers!
