I was wondering how many people out there still play using the old basic and expert sets from around 1978-1981? I found an old copy and considered trying it out, just for a quick game.

I use the D&D Rules Cyclopedia which was a compilation of Basic, Expert, Companion, etc. so I guess that'd be a yes. Oh, and just in case your group enjoys that quick game let me recommend OD&DITIES:

Original D&D, Holmes Basic D&D, and Moldvay Basic D&D all still have a substantial fanbase. There are a fair number of websites out there which are specifically devoted to out-of-print D&D material.

The OD&Dities site is a great place for more info on the old Basic/Expert system, as well as adventures, optional rules (including a great one for 'customized character classes' in issue 7 IIRC).

Someone named 'Bighara' also has a site devoted to 'OD&D': http://home.comcast.net/~bighara/jeffrpg.html

And of course Dragonsfoot.org has an entire forum devoted to OD&D (which is pretty active).

I would probably be trying to play a version of the D&D Cyclopedia system myself, were it not for the advent of 'Castles and Crusades'.

Have fun!

I've played it with my wife on occasion - she's not a gamer, and she finds its rules easier to understand than the bevy of 3e-itude. It's great for an afternoon game. Huzzah. :p

Fwiw, the new basic set is a pretty good front-end for 3rd edition - I'm sure it'd work great for kids. Doesn't have anywhere near the re-play value of the old basic editions, though - it's basically just a modular board game.

I still have all the boxed sets, and occasionally thumb through them just for nostalgia, and because I love the art. As for playing them, not in a long time. I wouldn't mind finding a group willing to try it, though.
