D&D Chess Set

You can't even play chess when all the pieces look the same!
Have you played on a lot of different chess sets? Those pieces are different enough, I think.

Also, if you look carefully, you can see the back of each base has the name of the piece on it.

If it were really a D&D set, one side would have doughty halflings as pawns, clerics as bishops, stealthy rogues as rooks, paladins as the knights, a wizard as king and a female fighter as the queen.
Traditionally, IIRC the rooks are more like cavaliers, pawns are like pikemen, knights are more like rogues, and queens are more like ... hm. Well, queen used to be called 'vizier', which might be filled by a powerful wizard in a D&D world.

I like the dragon theme, though. It feels a bit more stylish. I think PC/monster-type pieces would feel a bit too hokey for me, and wouldn't be as artsy. A set of cool dragon pieces makes a good display piece for non-gamers too.

Actually, I own a chess set made from Reaper minis that I comissioned a local "artiste" to paint for me.

My set is human Templars, etc. versus Undead-the set rocks!

It would totally rock but one piece is missing- a cleric who was advancing with a readied hammer and unfurled scroll. Apparently, its now a retired piece. :( AND the painter has moved away.

*grrrr*

This is the kind of overpriced novelty junk The Noble Collection and Ashton-Drake Galleries litters my mailbox with. I can get behind a D&D Clue game or a card game, but a $200 novelty chess set is firmly within the territory of Bradford Exchange Elvis dishware collections for gamers. I guess I'm not really in a position to be pointing fingers and calling people geeks, but.. geeeeeeeeeeek.

Even with the discount offered on Amazon.ca this is a tough sell for me... I don't play chess so often that I would be happy about spending >$100 on any chess set.
Even if you did play chess, you probably wouldn't be playing it with this. Fantasy chess sets are ornaments, not real chess sets.

A friend of mine had a gorgeous Lord of the Rings chess set, but whenever we played we always got out his cheap standard set.

glass.

Different dragons are not different enough... at least if they were colored, but these are too similar IMO. A different horn or wing or face is not going to tell you which is the bishop and which is the rook when all pieces are scattered around the board. But then, it's true that those few who will buy this set will not play more than a couple of games with it if any, and then they'll just delight in having spent 200$ in a unique piece. I'm biased in my opinion however, since I hate nearly all collecting hobbies.

I have this chess set! It is amazing, but EXTREMELY breakable. Luckily I play miniature combat games in addition to role playing so I always have super glue on hand. This chess set is also featured in an illustration in one of the D&D books showing the standard 3.5 characters actually playing chess with it. I can't recall which book it's in. Does anyone know? I'd love to post a photo of my chess set next to the illustration from the book to do a comparison.

Okay, yeah. It's in D&D 3.5's An Adventurer's Guide to Eberron on page 35. This exact chess set is featured in an illustration featuring several different Ebberon characters. I wish my scanner was working, I'd post an example picture. It would be cool to have a print of the illustration hung on the wall next to the chess set in your house, yeah? It would be like a little exhibit. . . .
