D&D dual weapons

Ravencrest

First Post
Hi everyone im been playing paper D&D with my friend for about 2 weeks , we had a fev session but some things are still not clear for us and we are makining our own game rules. I made this thread to clear things up and play legal :)

first of all my friend has a ranger using dual weapon style and every time he is using powers (daily, encounter or at will) he is using both wepons and does a lot of damage for example :
shadow wasp strike
discription says str vs reflex , hit 2 weapon dmg +str mod
main hand 2d8+4
off hand 2d8+4
and hunters quarry 1d8

my first question is if he is using dual weapons he can throw dice for both weapons dont matter what atttack ability he is using ???beacasue hes using hes both wepons attacks with almost all abilities for example when he is attacks using jaws of the wolf daily power he attacks two targets one with boths weapons and sceond with both is it right ???? after a fev session a have dubts we are playing legal damage is very high for level 3 character.maybe he should attack one monster with main hand and second with off hand ??? can he use both wepons damage to almost all powers(example Power "hit and run"can he strike with both weapons) or he can use them only when there is information (2 attacks main and off hand weapon)

second thing :) what about using this powers , daily powers can be used once per day, so after ever battle i can say we are sleepieng for 24 hours and i can use this power again every encounter ???

third question can party retreat at combat, while playing we used retreating and gave all our close combat enemies oportunity attacks and run away, after runnning away we were sleeping recharge everything and go back to kill te remaning enemies force(all damaged monsters regain all HP) is it leagal ???

fourth question :) what is penalty when party was defeated becasuse is hard to belive that everytime character die you must create a new one if you dont have cleric with ressurecion , who wants to create a new hero ever 1-2 sesssion :P so what punishment /penalty you use on your sessions when party is deafated ( decarse exp/gold) ???

fifth question :P how hunters quarry works ,lets say i attack a goblin a take him as a quarry , next turn i can attack another creature and take him as a quarry and deal extra dmg , so there almos no limit ??? besides a can take only one target at time ,so every time i attack a can take quarry a deal this extra damage and i count quarry only one time if im attacking 2 targets or one 2 times a throw dice only once for quarry :)???

Resting and Eating :) is there any specficetion how much character must eat to not die form thirst or hunger how many meals or bottles of wine :D

1. Only powers that specifically allow multiple attacks have them.

2. If you're only having one encounter per day the DM of your group should be taking steps to make this a suboptimal route (attacks in the night, important time frames, etc...)

3. It is legal but think realistically about this. If you attack a group of people and then run away, they could easily mount a proper force and attack you in the night while you are sleeping.

4. The penalty for dying decreases as you level up. At low levels you do not have access to resurrection spells and therefore usually the best option is to either re-roll or to pay someone in a town to resurrect your fiend for you. This penalty is mitigated by the fact that since you have died at low levels you should not be (most of the time) very dedicated to your character.

There is no Game Over in D&D.

5. Hunter's quarry can (usually) only be applied once per turn, and it is what makes rangers strikers, reading the PHB section on roles would clarify this.

Is it limitless? no
Is it powerful? yes

Eating sleeping follows the real-world rules, no rules, or whatever the DM decides in between.

btw the more you play D&D the more questions like this will be easily reasoned. Trust me, it will not always seem this complicated and unreasonable.

If you are having problems making characters that seem powerful or effective, try buying the DDI character builder for one month (id suggest waiting until mid march when the PHB 3 is released) You can then immediately cancel your subscription and only pay 15$ (or is it 17$) for all of the released 4e materials concerning character and gear options. Makes creating characters a breeze, and greatly increases the ability to maximize your potential.

Happy Gaming! And welcome to EN World.

To start I just want to say that your post is very difficult to read, but I'll try to answer some questions as best I can.

1) The only time you get to attack with both weapons is when the power tells you to do so(example: Twin Strike). For Jaws of the Wolf he can only attack one target because the target line says "One creature". He will make two attacks against that target. One attack with the main hand and one attack with the off hand. Each attack will do 2[W] + str.

2) You can only take an extended rest once every 12 hours.

3) Why didn't the enemies just chase you or track you down and attack while you were sleeping.

4) If you are dieing every 2 sessions someone is doing something wrong. Especially since your Ranger is doing way more damage than he should be because you are giving him too many attacks. From the start of your post it sounds like you are playing with one player and a DM. DnD is designed to be played by at least 5 people. 1 DM and 4 players. You can do it with just 2 people, but as a DM you are going to have to be very careful in how you design encounters.

5) Under normal circumstances you can only have 1 creature Quarried at a time. Quarrying a creature is a minor action. You can only apply the quarry damage once per round. So if you attack a creature twice you will only do the quarry damage once.

2) Your Action Points reset to 1 (unless you're a human with the proper feat) after every extended rest.... you gain additional Action Points every two encounters... there is a balance in there somewhere...

Without being precise... the damage calculations HAVE to be off.

Two-Weapon Rangers have two-weapon fighting.

Two-Weapon Fighting only adds bonus damage to the main hand weapon.

Both weapons cannot be doing the same amount of damage with the same attack bonus. It's not possible.

Always remember:

CHARACTER BUILDER DOES NOT CALCULATE OFF-HAND WEAPON DAMAGE CORRECTLY. EVER.

how to calculate the dmg with weapons properly a mean dual weapon fighting
lets take this ranger he hes magic longsword+1 and in character bulder it says 1d8+3 and a scimitar +1 in off hand 1d8+3 , where this charactwer builder makes an error, how to cacluate this right???
the only diffrence is that offhand has -1 attack :P
the whole dmg thing is little weird the character ranger who is on level 3 using both weapons can deal to single target large amount of dmg using for example jaws of the wolf 2d8 main hand , 2d8 offhand and quarry 1d8 in total he can do 42 :P

and second thing i have a battle with six creatures so every time my ragner attacks (once in round, one attack he can quarry) ,
im attacking creature with both weapons throw once dice for quarry and then next round a pick another creature and in the same round attack him as a quarry throwning dice for only one attack is it right to change the quarry so fast every turn :)??? , i have very strange feeling the party made of rangers is more deadly then warriors :P

Well given I don't know the feats he has (or even his level, or his equipment) so I can't answer that (but that damage does sound hella wrong for level 1), but if your question is...

'Do Rangers do lots of damage?' the answer is 'Yes, and that's their job.'
