D&D Dungeon Tiles - too late to start collecting?

I have not bought any of Wizards of the Coast's D&D tile sets. I saw them on Amazon recently and thought of getting some, but it appears that the very first one or two sets are no longer available except as expensive collectibles. The more recent sets look nice, but I don't want to buy them if I will be missing basic rooms and corridors which I imagine were available in the first set, and therefore I will be unable to make a basic dungeon. Do the later sets have basic rooms and corridors, or are all the later sets which are still readily available at basic retail prices only specialized pieces which are useless without the original set?

I don't really think so. There are generic chambers and hallways in later sets. There tend to be fewer of them than in the first sets, so getting a good set up isn't quite as simple, but it's not a huge hurdle (especially if you are comfortable ignoring bits of terrain).

Also, it's quite possible that WotC will put the older sets back in print at some time. They have put sets of DDM and SWM back in print to meet demand, so it's not out of the question.

Even if hte first sets were still out, most likely for larger dungeons you'd still need multiple sets.

If you like visuals, you might be better off with something like Skeleton Key Games and just print out exactly what you need as opposed to assembling multiple sets ad hoc.

Dave,

Thanks for that link. Are these sets real? I only ask that because I go to ebay, and I see this:

Ebay Dungeon Tiles Set 1

I ordered those 2 sets from Stiggy. I have to shop there more often. This combined with the Goodman Games sale and I have a new place to pick up stuff.

Amazon is sky high as well. Probably just a case of something suddenly becoming valuable in the collector's market and not everyone catching up with it. It is pretty unusual for something that recent to jump in value that quickly.

Let us know if you get them!

Usually when things are not available at Stiggy you can't see the product.

Its definitely not too late to start getting them, and Set 2 and beyond are still very inexpensive (at least on Ebay). The latter sets have a lot of basic stuff in them as well.

IMO, these are the best products that Wizards creates.

Big agreement from me here. Amazingly high quality for the price too - heavy card stock that is even water resistant! (I spilled a coke on them and it just wiped off  ). Also WotC has a dungeon tile mapper with all of the sets up to #4 on it here Very, very cool.

The updated mapper is at http://jai.hordelings.com/

WOTC has stopped working with it, presumably since they are going to work on their new software.
