D&D Dungeon Tiles - too late to start collecting?

OK - so I've got £50 of Amazon vouchers (currently - might get some more at my birthday party in two weeks time!).

I'm considering either buying a copy of Descent (for the mini's and the tiles) or spending some or all of the money on Dungeon tiles. At the moment I have almost no mini's (but I'm happy to substitute other things for them) and I was considering asking future players to help contribute towards a collection.

What does the combined knowledge of ENWorld think? A copy of Descent, or Dungeon tiles - this is all aiming towards a good 4e experience. I've already ordered the H1, H2 and H3 adventures from Amazon, so any maps that I get with those are covered.

I can't really give you a "side by side" comparison as I don't own the Dungeon Tiles. I will say that I found yet another use for Descent the other night. I used the counters to represent Bennies (sort of like Action Points), damage taken and the Stunned markers in a Savage Worlds game I ran. They were perfect for that.

Another thing included in Descent are some "dungeon terrain features" like piles of rocks, pits, rune portals and things like that. And, because they are effects that can be produced in the course of the boardgame, counters for fire, web and poison. Those are good for marking maps too.

As far as the minis go, again, the PC types are just a bit smaller than optimal but they do represent a wide array of character types. The monsters are a varied lot including Beastmen, Evil Sorcerers, Giant Spiders, Giant Bats, Ogres, Giants, Manticores, Nagas, Demons and Dragons (I might be forgetting one or two). Several of these are fairly large. You will probably pay less per-mini overall for these than you would for D&D minis and the selection is going to be set rather than random like with D&D minis (unless you buy them from a second hand dealer). But remember, they aren't painted so take that into account.

Unless anyone else can come up with a stunningly good reason to spend £50 on the Descent game, I think I'll spend the money on continuing the Dungeon tiles collection (once I've received the first one) and buying some D&D miniatures.

thanks, Rel.

that is a really tough call. Descent has some of the best minis and high quality maps that lock together, plus tons of tokens you can use in a 4e rpg game. If Money is holding you back, i would probably just grab some tile sets and individual minis first, but eventually, you really should get Descent.

P.S. -- you can see some close ups of some Dungeon tile sets in this thread, i've been posting them there. Great stuff. Keep in mind that some of these maps are home made ones i tailored in Photoshop, but most are store bought.

...and Descent is a fun game in and of itself.

This is freakin' crazy how much people are paying for DT1 and 2! These are the only products from wotc I've bought in the last 3 years, and I'm wishing I would have left them in the shrink wrap now!
