D&D Dungeon Tiles - too late to start collecting?

I don't know how much these sets sell for but as an alternate suggestion that I've recommended here before, consider picking up the Descent board game from Fantasy Flight Games. It's rather pricey at $80 but for that money you get:

A complete dungeon-delving boardgame that's pretty fun in its own right

a BUNCH of snap-together tiles for making corridors and rooms, all with 1 inch grid on them

80 plastic miniatures (these aren't pre-painted like D&D minis but they represent a wide array of critters and characters)

TONS of counters for everything from treasure chests and pits to effects like webs and fire

The game is designed to be played as a competitive boardgame with the PC's vs. The "Overlord". But I adapted it to be a regular RPG using the same (elegant) dice mechanics from the boardgame and it was not only simple enough for my daughter (who was 4 when I got it) to understand, but it also helped her develop her math and counting skills by adding up pips on the dice.

It really is one of the most useful things I've ever picked up for roleplaying in general and if you can find a copy (especially on sale or purchased with a coupon) then I recommend it.

Yeah, i bought this a while back (and the expansion) and i agree that it is better for stealing for D&D than the actual game itself. I mean the core game is good (and honestly, 4e borrows some of the gameplay) but the whole Me vs. You mentality is not to my liking. Still, the minis are excellent and the board is very sturdy. You get beastmen, gargoyle things, necromancers, dragons, giants, demons, skeletons, hell hounds, giant spiders, and maybe one more. Oh yeah, a couple awesome nagas that are better than any WotC ever put out.

I just received Sets 1 and 2 from Stiggy's in the mail. Look pretty good and I'll be using them for the kids game this weekend. Glad I didn't bid $46 for them on Ebay. Thanks for the link Dave.

Excellent!

(And you're welcome. :) )

Can someone explain what Dungeon Tiles are and how they work? And what the sets are? APparently there are a lot of sets, but I keep hearing sets 1 and 2.

Are the miniatures in Descent the same scale as D&D plastic miniatures?
1 inch bases on the medium sized monsters, though the humans are slightly smaller height wise. Monsters are all pretty good.

I agree with the lot of this. The height difference on the humanoids is not enough to really bother me. We're talking a couple millimeters maybe.
