D&D editions no more

cimerians

First Post
After years of debate since 3E came out................

I had a session of the original D&D game with a few friends the other day after work (The old blue boxed set)

The next day we decided to continue with it.

It was fun. The first time in a long while we didn't need a rulebook chained to our wrists to play. The DM had the old blue booklet and me and a few others simply had some dice and paper.

No figures either.

It was a blast.

I recently tossed my 3E's into a box, not to be played again. (Except for Gen Cons and to keep up with another friends online 3E game.)

It was fun while it lasted WOTC but we're having too much fun with the original game. No more editions. Life is too short.

THE END

thanks joe b.

this is one of my favorite RPG sites.

based on d20 or not, a lot of good stuff and topics can be found here.

I've recommended it a lot.

Well, I'm glad you've found something you like, and I'm glad you could join us and enjoy our company. But I doubt you'll find many people that completely agree with you as this IS a D20 community. However, there are still many people here with a fondness for the old games, and we're (usually) quite civil.

Hmmm, not sure about that.

One the face of it, this is a 3e community, yes. But as this poll indicates, most of the members here played older editions of D&D. Plenty of people here have a perfectly positive attitude towards OD&D or 1e, they just don't play it anymore.

There was a discussion quite like this a few months ago, here. Someone else, just like the original poster, got out the old edition rules and played the 1e White Plume Mountain, and wrote a long post about why they enjoyed it.

Isn't that what he was saying? That he wasn't sure if most people here would box up their 3e stuff and exclusively play OD&D, but that they had fond feelings for it? That most people here play 3e, making it a d20 community?

??

Opinions

Ok, first I'd just like to clarify that the following is an opinion and not meant to induce flames or peeve people off. I'm not calling anyone anything or implying any insult, it's just my personal opinion of older editions.

They suck. Really, I mean it, I hate them. But then, I like change, I like dynamism, I like the future and technology and am excited about everything that lies ahead.

That doesn't mean I accept everything new without critical evaluation, it just means I like to test new things out and have new experiences.

Now, the original poster at least tried 3rd ed. He found it not to his liking and went back. Good for him! Each to their own. But for me, having elf as a character class borders on childish. That's not to say you're childish if you play it, it just doesn't smack of sophistication and maturity. Ok, ok, yes, yes, yes, sitting down pretending you're a psychic warrior ain't all that mature either, but the level of sophistication in the newer games allows far more options that can be explored.

Which is why I hated 2nd ed. and, as I understand it 1st ed is only marginally different from 2nd, 1st ed. Sure, you didn't have to know too many rules, but that just meant you had to make stuff up as you went along. Ugh... for some people that's fine, but for me, I like a good, solid game mechanic that I can tweak if I really want to but which gives me a frame of reference to work with.

So I'm glad you've had fun with the old game, it's something different after all. But I'm betting that the classes Elf and Dwarf get old REAL quick and you'll be hungering for something with a bit of meat on its bones soon enough :)

OK, fair enough. My point is quite a few poeple here have fond memories of it. If that doesn't conflict with what Kilmore was saying, sorry :)
