Well, to give another example of roleplaying yourself - there are a number of games out there where basing your character on your real life person isn't a bad thing. I remember Villains and Vigilantes in particular stressed that idea. And, really, in some games, there's nothing wrong with playing yourself in a strange situation. So long as it doesn't get in the way of the game, I think it's a good thing.

Role-playing doesn't automatically entail pretending to be someone at all. I never do it and I flatter myself I roleplay okay.

I also don't roleplay for any kind of escapist purposes.

To me its about the game really, the roleplaying is part of the game, but only part of it, if I wanted to act I've got plenty of chance to join amateur dramatics groups.

Is one term more important than the other?

Roleplaying means playing a character not the rules of the game.

Game is something you do for fun with your friends, stress relief, and the like.

Both are as important as one another.

The Game aspect in an RPG is the most important. If I wanted to hone my acting skills, I'd join up with the local theatre group. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of roleplaying going on, but it's a game first and foremost.

In the heyday of board wargames, "beer and pretzels" was a term used to describe games that were simpler, shorter and less serious than the average board wargames -- which required substantial concentration and effort by today's gaming standards.

Quoted for violent disagreement. Honestly, saying that roleplaying is always "pretending to be someone else" is like saying that roleplaying games are always D&D.

I guess I don't understand. Role playing means that you play a role. I assume you'll agree.

So you must play a different role, unless you are portraying yourself as you are when you are portraying it...which is some kind of infinite loop making it impossible. "I sit at the table and say that i say that i say that i say..." Even if you portray yourself when roleplaying, which defeats the whole exercise IMHO, you have to portray some perceived version of yourself that is, therefor, not yourself and is a role.

Like I said, I guess I don't understand your statement at all...
