That's not any better than a barter economy. Heck it's probably even worse.
You do know that’s exactly how paper money works in a cash society?

one piece of paper has 10 written on it the other has 20, people then agree that the 20 paper is worth twice as much as the 10 paper ....

It was a theoretical musing, not a serious campaign idea. Still, it might be interesting to have a fair sized magic dead area in a campaign....

magic dead areas can be good. As long as it’s not every encounter. Or even every session. I generally have a different style of encounter depending if it’s a known or unknown dead magic area.
