D&D Miniature Distribution

The Goliath is sought after by skirmishers to a certain extent if you know where to look.

Did a quick net search and, true enough, there are people who want this figure. So maybe
it's not a total disaster. ;-)

Just a note: if you have the money, it is well worth picking up a sealed case (12 boosters) of an expansion.

The distribution in that will give you 1 or 2 of each uncommon and 4 of each common, and, in most cases, 12 different rares.

At the moment I'll have to wait, b ut yeah, I was considering this. My FLGS in Glasgow charges £8.99 per pack, but an online shop I use has them at £7.85 - £8.25 depending on set, and a case will cost at most £90.00 from them. A fair wee bit to drop in one fell swoop, but I suppose a few rares and uncommons I don't need could be put on EBay afterwards to cancel that out. ;-)

The chances of picking up two boosters that have the same rare is 1 in 24. Unusual, but not unheard of (unfortunately).

Yeah, I guess since it's a far small set than, say, most CCG sets, one is far more likely to see duplciates.

On closer examination, it was acutally a rare, two commons and an uncommon I had duplicated in my two Deathknell boxes. Not a huge disaster, because "duplicates" can also mean "entire encounter". :>

I know in the heyday of Mage Knight, you could buy a case, pick a few key pieces and still sell the set for more than the full retail price of the case. I really wouldn't be suprised if you could do this for D&D Miniatures. Indeed, if you want a lot of one or two commons (say you want 10 Kobold Miners), this still could be a good tactic. You'll get them for free in the long run.

I am going to do my utmost to sell this strategy to my girlfriend. Considering the growls I got when I tried to paint up the Citadel zombies and took up the dining table for a whole week, she probably won't mind. :>

If you're not playing the D&D miniature game you're better off buying single miniatures, or else you won't end up with the number of orcs and goblins you'll need...

On the other hand there are some useful rare minis (dragons for instance), and IMHO these cost too much.

Here's what I do: whenever a new set is released I buy a few (2-5) packs. After that I won't buy more packs, but rather single miniatures at eBay.

Btw, you've had some pretty bad luck. It doesn't happen very often, but it's not unheard of either.

That's the way I do it too. I have quite a substantial collection by now. If you bite teh bullet and get a couple of boxes a piece of aberrations, giants of legend, and underdark, you should end up with a decent variety of useful and cool-looking minis.

I am just making my foray into the DDM line myself. I sriously hope there will be a chance in the future that WotC will put out complete sets.

That won't happen. They'd hurt their sales if they sold complete sets. It's a collectible game, after all.

But you can get complete sets on eBay, and If I remember correctly, there's a site where you can sign up and when a new set is released, they sell you a certain number of boosters that will contain a complete set (plus spares of commons and uncommons). The boosters are opened so they see what's inside, but other than that, they're fine. They even have installment plans for payment.

Deathknell is poor for distribution. I got the EXACT SAME box twice.

That's not poor distribution, that's just bad luck. You can't really judge distribution based on two boosters. Or a dozen.

two badgers is better than one. ;-)

Two badgers are useless. You need a dozen. Plus two myconid guards, and a displacer serpent. Because if you have all that, you can do this (it's the DDM version of that)

I really like the D&D miniature, actually: the paint jobs do the trick

It's quite a time-saver - and as we all know, time is money. Not that I'm not content with my paintjob results (they don't look anything like those professional affairs, with all the advanced techniques - I do dry-brushing, but not the rest - but they look okay), but I just can't paint dozens of figures. Or hundreds, in my case.

he more game-specific miniatures are useful

That's right. The Black Dragon really looks like a Genuine D&D Black Dragon, not just some winged lizards with black scales. BTW, the Black Dragon Figure is frickin' awesome, and there's a surefire way to get it: The D&D Basic Game.

:-) Consdiering my group, this would go down a storm. Hmm, I wonder if there's a local wizard called Trevor, who has a Gate spell?....

I've picked this up as a Christmas present for someone else. Once I've seen it in action, I may well grab one for myself. :>
