D&D Miniatures - Thumbs up or down?

with each box of Harbinger expansion (8figures) you get 1 customer survey. with 50 boxes you get 50 surveys. and the postage is included.

i returned all my customer survey cards.

so anyone at WotC. diaglo is me. i am diaglo. etc... the same one here, there, and pretty much everywhere on the net.

Alas, I have to pay postage.

Diaglo, have you had a chance to look at any of the Dragoneye ones yet? Do you think they're of better quality?

I received Dragoneye ones at Gencon.

The quality has definatly improved.

I'm a bit dissapointed in the "wind" elemental tho.

I love them, but I lament not having the money to complete Harbinger, much less Dragonseye in a timely fashion...

I gave it a sideways. Not useful for me as I'm not only a RPG'er I'm also a tabletop gamer and used to painting my own minis and feel I can get a reasonable finish on them. Also in the UK the WotC minis are more expensive than in the US - circa 1 GB Pound per figure which equates to 1.50 US Dollars. There are some figure manufacturers in the UK doing Fantasy figures which work out at about 1.50 Pounds unpainted though Reaper work out at around 2.50 Pounds per figure so there is a much lower cost advantage.

Good side is that they are useful for gamers who don't want to paint figures or pay a lot for painted metals. Also could increase the market for the metal fig manufacturers.

While I have yet to buy a single pack of the miniatures, something tells me I probably will sooner or later, whether I need it or not.

The random packaging turns me off quite a bit, however. The main use for miniatures for me would be as an aid in playing out combat encounters, and random packaging makes that a bit difficult. If I want to play out an encounter with a band of orcs, I don't have much need for two Human Commoners, a Shambling Mound and Tordek the Dwarf (or whatever I get in the package).

Sadly, I have neither the time nor the talent to paint metal miniatures. Cheap, pre-painted plastic ones thus seems like the best solution for me.

The ultimate thing for me would be if they started selling some sort of "encounter packs". Like, for instance, "Hobgoblin Warband", "Ogre tribe" or "Undead horde". Each of these would contain 5-10 basic troops (hobgoblin warriors, ogres, skeletons), and one or two leader types (hobgoblin chieftain, ogre barbarian, wight, etc.).

But oh well. Since I dislike most collectible games I suppose I'm not part of the target audience, either.

I've just skimmed the whole thread and, to be honest, I don't have anything to add to the discussion.

True, I love the figures, and so does my son, and I've used them extensively in the game I play.

But, I can't find a place where I can buy them individually, except on Ebay, or trade.

I did find the trading forum on this board though, Im talking outside links.

I like the minis a lot because I don't have to take the time to paint them and the price is just right. I now have more specific monsters rather than using a variant goblin for a minotaur or a sock for a Dragon (yes, I have most of the Dragoneye Dragons already). The new expansion is a hell of a lot better looking than the Harbinger set, more color and finer paint jobs though the Half-Elf Sorceror is probably the worst paintjob outside of an Infinity Challenge Heroclix. The sense of action in each of the Dragoneye minis is increased two fold over the harbinger and my god do these minis pack a punch...

Mostly, I don't care about the randomness because I just buy a box or two every week and feel happy with what I get, continue to occasionally use random goblin number 6 as a kobold and what not but hell, who cares...

I like them. especially the monsters. They seem to be quite good. For me.. these minatures make up the perfect filler mini's. My main character in one of my games is represented by a minature I sculpted (nice Norse Warrior with Maul), but the monsters now get represented by these D&D ones. Like many people I don't have the time to paint my own, and I am not willing to make it. (I am willing to make time to sculpt mini's though)

Anyway, anyone else get the Cleric of Gruumsh, yet? I ask because I was absolutely FLOORED at how GOOD that guys paint job was, and was wondering if mine was the exception, rather than the rule. I also liked the paint job on the Human Blackguard, though thought it could've been better.

I've only got 56 figures so far (1 Entry Pack + 5 Expansion Packs), but I'm pretty pleased with them so far. The paint jobs tend to fall on the "Average" scale, with a couple of mediocre ones like the Human Bandit, to fantastic ones, like the Cleric of Gruumsh. Can't wait til I can get my hands on my first Dragoneye Expansion Packs.

The only disappointments I've experienced so far are the following:

1) The lack of a Lawful Good Commander. Not only is Lawful Good the faction for which I have the most figures, but it's also the only one for which I don't have a Commander. I have a Commander for Chaotic Good (Arcane Archer), Lawful Evil (Human Blackguard), and Chaotic Evil (Tiefling Captain and Cleric of Gruumsh), but none for Lawful Good. Really annoying, especially since I want to primarily play a Lawful Good force.

2) Ember. I DESPISE Ember!!! As I said, I've only gotten 6 packs, but out of those 6, no less than FOUR have had Ember. So not only have I gotten 4 duplicates of the same figure out of 6 boxes (2/3rds of my packs had Ember), but they're duplicates of a Unique figure, which means that I can't use more than 1 Ember in a game, ANYWAY! GD Ember ITA!!!
