D&D Miniatures - Thumbs up or down?

What do you think of the D&D Miniatures?

  • Thumbs up - I like them!

  • Thumbs down - I don't like them!

  • Thumbs sideways - I don't care!

I find them very useful. I would rather go out and buy a pack of these mini's then metal ones because it is much cheaper to go the random booster pack deal. Granted I personally use metal mini's for my PCs, but when it comes to DMing.. I might as well use the cheaper ones for the monsters.

I appreciate that they are probably helping to keep the market focus away from trying to get sales on a new set of core rules, and hope that lasts for a good several years so I don't see any 3.6, 3.75, or whatever anytime soon.

But I myself have no use for them:

One of my players went on eBay and bought stacks of them - choosing rather than random. But he only brought them to the MnM game once, and never to either DnD game: not mine nor his.

I've just skimmed the whole thread and, to be honest, I don't have anything to add to the discussion.

True, I love the figures, and so does my son, and I've used them extensively in the game I play.

But, I can't find a place where I can buy them individually, except on Ebay, or trade.

I did find the trading forum on this board though, Im talking outside links.

Can someone help? If you can't post here, please email me at chrisv@nucleus.com

Outlanders,

For another trading site you can check out:

www.maxminis.com

There are a few Canadians hanging out there, so not even too expensive for postage, depending on who you trade with.

Cheers :)

I've never been all that big on using minis for a game, but my brother bought me an entry pack as a Christmas present, and I went out today and bought another 4 expansion sets.

I'm not too wild about the collectible aspect, but ten bucks for eight minis that I don't have to paint is a pretty good deal as far as I am concerned.

Also, the "Skirmishes" game (yeah, it's "D&D Lite") makes for a nice "Let's not mess up our ongoing campaign" game in the event that a player or two can't make the regular game session, or a good time-waster if you're waiting for a player who's gonna be late to the regular game.

On the whole, I really like 'em.

Regards,
Darrell King

There is a Lawful Good commander in the set, Cleric of Yondalla and the Sword of Heironeous are both LG commanders.

I assume this is directed at me?

Yeah, there's a Sword of Heironeous, which is Rare, as well as a Cleric of Yondalla AND Cleric of Order, which're both Uncommon, who're Commanders for Lawful Good in the Harbinger set. Dragoneye also has the Dwarven Defender and Purple Dragon Knight, both of whom are Rare. Problem is, I haven't gotten any of them in the packs I bought. Oh well. First chance I get, I intend to order a bunch of miniatures from Popular Collections.com, including the Cleric of Order and Cleric of Yondalla. I'd prefer a Sword of Heironeous, but who can argue with two Commander figures who're only about $1 a piece, each? When I get the chance, this is what I'm gonna be ordering from Popular Collections.

Lawful Good
$0.79 Cleric of Order (Harbinger; Uncommon; Commander 5)
$0.99 Cleric of Yondalla (Harbinger; Uncommon; Commander 3)
$0.79 Gnome Fighter (Dragoneye; Common)
$0.79 Human Crossbowman (Dragoneye; Common)
$1.29 Stalwart Paladin (Dragoneye; Uncommon)
$0.79 Stonechild (Dragoneye; Common)

Chaotic Good
$0.79 Elf Spearguard (Dragoneye; Common)

Any
$0.79 Barbarian Mercenary (Dragoneye; Common)

Lawful Evil
$1.29 Cleric of Nerull (Dragoneye; Uncommon; Commander 3)
$0.79 Goblin Skirmisher (Dragoneye; Common)
$0.59 Goblin Sneak (Harbinger; Common)
$0.79 Goblin Warrior (Dragoneye; Common)
$0.39 Half-Orc Fighter (Harbinger; Common; Commander 3)
$0.79 Hobgoblin Warrior (Dragoneye; Common)
$0.99 Human Executioner (Harbinger; Uncommon)
$1.29 Urthok the Vicious (Dragoneye; Uncommon; Commander 5)

Chaotic Evil
$0.79 Bugbear (Dragoneye; Common)
$0.99 Half-Orc Assassin (Harbinger; Rare)
$1.99 Orc Archer (Harbinger; Uncommon)
$1.49 Orc Berserker (Harbinger; Uncommon)
$0.99 Orc Warrior (Harbinger; Common)

Comes out to $20.19, which is only 20 cents more than two Expansion Packs, but nets me 5 more miniatures then I'd get with 2 Expansion Packs. Only 1 Rare rather than 2, though. The other plus is that, while rounding out the various factions I've collected so far (Except for Chaotic Good, but I hate elves, anyway), I also get plenty of figures which're useful in a D&D game. Especially with the monsters. I'll be getting 3 Goblins, 2 Hobgoblins, 1 Bugbear, 2 Half-Orcs, and 3 Orcs, along with a couple of human villains (Cleric of Nerull and Human Executioner). All in all a good selection.

Yep. For about the same price, I can get 7 Reaper figures. That's not even counting paints and brushes to paint those figures. I'm getting 21 figures, here. Three times what I'd get in Reaper miniatures, and they're already painted. The only effort I have to put into them is boiling some water for whatever figures might have bent weapons. And that's no trouble at all, in comparison to sitting down and painting 20 figures or so. I prefer Reaper for PC figures, like this gentleman, below.

But really, why pay so much for creatures which only serve as cannon fodder in your game? 79 cents for Hobgoblins, Bugbears, and Orc Warriors is a damn fine deal.

I have little interest in the skirmish game itself, so I'm not worried about how many Embers will pop up or if I get commanders or not personally. Extra Embers I suppose I could use in a D&D game as a bunch of monks from the same order or something. I mean what the hell, how often do players fight a bunch of goblins or kobolds that all look the same? The skirmish game rules themselves might be useful for mass combat situations. However, PCs, leaders and other important NPC types would of course fight using normal rules.
