D&D Minis vs. Warhammer?

In terms of popularity, is the D&D skirmish game cutting into the popularity of such games as Warhammer? Just from the cheaper cost factor, I could see how it might...

I know one of the local shops in my area are all about Warhammer still. A friend and I went in there several months ago just to query about D&D games (either mini or RPG) and they glossed over that and started talking about their Warhammer games!

I think that Warhammer is almost a way of life in addition to being a game. People who play Warhammer often read about the stuff, talk about the stuff, enjoy assembling and painting the figures and customizing their figures. The difference with the D&D minis is that they are poor quality (comparred to the Warhammer ones) and there is no real talent involved with putting the army together (in terms of assembly and painting).

And not a cheap way of life. I imagine that hardcore WH gamers spend even more on their hobby than hardcore D&Ders. That'd be another big reason why they'd be unlikely to switch -- they've already got so much invested in WH.

If D&D Minis are cannibalizing an existing mini game's players, I'd suspect MageKnight before Warhammer.

I would be surprised if DDM had any impact on Warhammer. Games Workshop increased their mini size to the point that they are incompatiable with most other figures on the market. At least with DDMs I can still put some Reaper minis beside them and not have them feel intimidated ;) I left Warhammer years ago when I realized that they were going to continue to soak us for new rules every 3-5 years and go out of their way to change mini sizes to render old one unusale in tournaments. And don't even get me started on the Space Marine/Titan Leions - Epic Warhammer thing.

Well, the D&D minis game is skirmish-oriented, so it's really a different beast altogether from WHFB. The best WotC could hope for is divert some gamers from MageKnight.

I've actually seen more folks playing the Star Wars mini game than the D&D one. Maybe that's just my area.
