Oh, I read Set as saying "there is a class that's new," but "there will be a new class" makes a lot more sense. Yeah, the monk is just new-er.I don't think that's correct. For starters, the monk's not new. The monk is "premium content" however. (Personally I recommend folks save their money as the monk is a very "clicky" class to play properly-- moreso even than a spellcaster.)
I have seen rumors about what the new class is, but I think I might be under NDA on that point... so can't discuss.

Any recommendations on what kind of character to make to start out?

Ranger or paladin would be a good starting choice. (You can use cure light wounds wands-- let me know your character name and I will mail you one.)
It's D&D. (Most of) the usual rules apply.

Thanks for the advice! I've made Blargnus Secundus on Lamannia, a Ranger 2 as of right now. They only give you the one server option, else I'd have happily proliferated myself onto Thelanis.

Oh that's no problem. They've mirrored all the normal server characters over to the beta. I have plenty of toons there with plenty of cash.
In fact you should let me know how much "help" you want, versus how much you'd like to savor the "newb" experience.
Tell me more about Blargnus-- race, alignment, etc. I might have race-restricted items I can send over.

I don't know about Blargnus but I made a dwarven fighter named Felnore Axethane (I have a long sword at the moment though

That's a bloody addictive game - I just pulled an all-nighter, and it was a hoot!
Blargnus is now a dwarf ranger 2/barbarian 1. I've got him kitted out for TWFing axes with *boatloads* of hps. Barbarian 2 shouldn't be more than a few hours of play away.

I'll back blargney about it being a fun game. I just spent my free afternoon playing.
I would also like to say, even if everyone already knows anyway, that Wulf is sure a swell guy. He was very generous helping me out this afternoon.
