Finally, the dwarves cannot hide behind aeons-old hatred aimed at other races. Everyone with one or more of the words "stone", "iron (or other metal)", "axe (or maybe hammer, if you find a progressive one)", or "beard" in their names: Please take your seat on yonder boats. And never mind that the seats look like kegs of smoke powder, that's just decoration. And for those who are the last surviving members of their clans: Reunion's ahead.

I once had a dwarf who, after many months un-named, was given an ultimatum: no xp until I gave him a name. I proposed Nhonayem McIronhammerfireyforgebeardaxe. It didn't fly. Would he get more than one keg to sit on? :D

Well, the person sitting on my shoulder said humans, and I am starting to get tired to arguing with him. So I'm just going to give in from now on.

Weapon survivor.

And I voted humans off. Humans are finally worth playing, but after years of neglect I am seeing dwarves being played for the first time ever in 3E. I like that a race that was so rarely played before is enjoying a period of popularity. My feelings may change in a few years when the newness wears away, but for now... Dwarves are my pick for survivor.

Really? Well, I wouldn't say years of neglect. There are a few of us who've been faithful..;)

I personally love dwarves, but in this case, they've gotta go. I've said it before and I'll say it again--without humans, there's no one for the audience (which is, for the most part, human themselves) to relate to. Too many people make characters that are defined by their race. With only humans, you are forced to create deep characters, not some beer-swilling sociopath with an inexplicable Scottish accent.
You're arguing that because D&D players are (mostly) human, that human are the essential PC race.

I would counter that with new advances in genetic engineering, it may soon be possible to create a whoe new race of hominids: hard-working, stoic, practical - dwarves.

Once we've accomplished that, then humans will be unneeded. Those dwarves who remain can engineer a better ENWorld than we pitiful humans ever could, and a better D&D! Then who will be essential, Huh?

Then who will be essential!?

I vote dwarves. But only 'cause they scare me now, the supremicist blighters! I was gonna say get rid of the boring humans, 'cause I like playing dwarves, but, no, I think it's time for the humans to pull it together in the eleventh hour as we do in the real world and vote the dwarves off the island.

As predicted, dwarves will be voted off.

Which will leave us with Humans as the Ultimate Fantasy Race. Yeah.

Humans are a fantasy race. Ever notice that nobody IRL can agree on exactly what makes one human?

I refer here to the Pro Life VS Pro Choice debates(ie. When is one human: conception, birth, or somewhere in between?) This makes me think: what makes one human? AFAIK, there are no set criteria that do not beg the question or alienate some of those who are currently considered human.

DISCLAIMER
I do not intend to waylay the topic towards this; please don't start discussing it. Fires start, I think, from such.;)

If I've done something wrong here, I'm sorry.

If this happens, D&D will be only about combat and mining, and all the story-hours will wither and die, to be replaced with orderly reports on how they found the mother-lode of some metal :p

Typical dwarf. Greedy to the end: "I'm killing you with a keg of smokepowder" "But I want more than one!" :D

I had a world where the humans had been eradicated by the other races because their king irked evey other racial king by killing all their first borns/high advisors. It was kind of fun.

The homebrew world I'm planning will feature humans as a minor race. There, the old races won't have dwindled and retreated, and humans are only those who live where the others do not want to live. In that world, the human ability to adapt will not ensure their dominance, but their survival.
