D&D Real-Time Strategy in the works.

A little while ago, Atari hinted that it was planning on taking D&D where it's never been taken before in PC games. Well, it looks like they weren't kidding. Gamespy posted a sneak-preview of the new D&D real-time strategy. No screenshots yet, but there is some interesting info. Here's an exerpt...

From a gameplay standpoint, the Dungeons & Dragons RTS (yes, it doesn't have a name yet) will explore multiple levels of combat. You'll be able to fight your enemy on the main map, as well as under the map in a whole subterranean dungeon network. The fiction has it that an immense sunken city, destroyed long ago, lurks under the surface. Parts of the city still reach up to the ground level. You might see a spire sticking out of the ground that you can break into, opening up a stairway into the city ruins below. Or, you might see the top of a dome that you can shatter, sending your flying creatures within to attack a massive underground temple. Can't reach your enemy on the surface? Tunnel under his village and attack him from behind!

As with any good Dungeons & Dragons adventure, your main characters will be able to evolve as you play. A character may start the game as a Paladin, and later you can choose to advance along a path that enhances her warrior abilities or her clerical abilities, allowing you to customize your heroes to fit your play style. Thief characters take on new importance, as the underground areas are much like dungeons, with locked doors, traps, and secrets to uncover.

Did it cross anyone else's mind that the setting they were referring to in the article could be Eberron?

Sounds like they've come up with some decent twists to the old formulas of RTS games...

I'd be willing to bet that Eberron is the setting for the D&D RTS. It seems like publishing D&D games that are set in Eberron would be a good way to raise interest in the setting. It's already been confirmed that Dungeons & Dragons Online (the D&D MMORPG) will use the Eberron setting.

Interesting and in a way makes me think of Master of Magic, surface world and the underworld, build units, cities, hire heros, and then send them off to take over the rest of the world.

Why real time, I hate real time!

WOTC is really pushing Eberron down our throats. It will be the setting of the DnD MMORPG, and now RTS. If lots of people don't like the setting, it could backfire big time.

A lot does seem to be riding on it but every concern that has been brought up are the same as when FR was introduced. I think they know or at least have an feeling for the way things will turn out. I just wonder if they can keep the setting out of it.

Wouldn't keeping the setting out of it defeat the purpose?

It'd be kind of lame to have an Eberron RTS if I can't build Warforged.

Well, WOTC seems to have Eberron everyplavce, but they don't seem to be promoting Greyhawk or ever FR as much as this.

That's probably because Eberron is brand new. FR and Greyhawk have been around for years.

If the D&D RTS does turn out to be set in Eberron, I won't mind. I've already played several D&D games set in FR and Greyhawk, so Eberron might be an interesting change of pace.

Yes it would but if they could have those things in it without stating it could make more generic. Tying it to a setting a setting could alienate some buyers.
