D&D Rules Compendium (Hardcover) - October 2007

No, the Magic Item Compendium is a sign that Spell Compendium made a lot of money, as would be a Feat Compendium, a Race Compendium or a Class Compendium.

That we need 160 pages of supplemental rules is a sign that the game has some serious damn bloat.

I dunno. I could hope that the environmental books are getting reprinted in here for one. Plus other goodies like say the retraining rules from PHB II and the association rules too, maybe some of the better ideas in the DMG II like the mob rules, and some other goodies from hither and yon.

Definitely a book I would buy.

One could possibly hope that it would be OGC, but, somehow I seriously doubt it.

This is the kind of book that I hope it is. I am also getting the Magic Item Compendium, if only so that I can have a single reference for items spread across books. This is why the Spell Compendium was a good buy for me.

As rulesets expand, especially over the course of 10s of books, it is not unexpected to see some of them compiled and repurposed in a way that is easily consumable.

And if some of these become Core+, then I look forward to their inclusion in the SRD. :) It would be good to see other companies be able to use some of this stuff.

D&D Rules Compendium (Hardcover)
by Chris Sims (Compiler)
Hardcover: 160 pages
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast (October 16, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 078694725X
ISBN-13: 978-0786947256
http://www.amazon.com/D-Rules-Compendium-Chris-Sims/dp/078694725X/

It's definitely going to be a collection of additional rules from 3.5 supplements, such as:
- rules to create weapons of legacy
- horror rules from HoH
- battle goals (?) rules from HoB
- rules for alternative magic systems (UA, Incarnum, Book of Magic)
- variant rules for combat (UA, Bo9S)
- other additional rules from UA, e.g. Contacts/Reputation

Perhaps it doesn't need to have character materials such as classes or feats, but maybe some example.

Heh ... I'll just chuck that sure sign on the bonfire with all the other five hundred or so sure signs of 4e that we've had over the last year. They work wonders for keeping me warm through the cold and dark winter nights.

:D

Fine by me. I'm still reeling from Jakar's revelation that 4e has its own Huns. Sounds a bit unfair to me...

See, you and me match up nicely.
I've got no interest in Eberron in specific or other people's fluff in general.
But give me a tool set for building my own fluff and I'm there!!
Hell yes. I want all the crunch and mechanics and optional rules they can produce, all as flavor-neutral as possible. Let me come up with the world, and the place in it that each class and feat and magic system has. All I need WotC for is a halfway balanced rules set.

Rules Compendium = Updated FAQ/rules clarification + with a bit of gravy to make it palatable.

Here’s the thing with a “feats” book. The only reason to buy most of these books that WotC is churning out is for one or two specific feats that support your character’s build.
Want a decent melee Warlock? Need to buy Dragon Magic.
Want a decent fighter? Need to buy PhB II.
Want to min-max? Book of Exalted

Putting all that together in one book would destroy profits.

No, it wouldn't because WotC made the lion's share of its profits from those books in the first 90 days of release. That's how the RPG market is these days, sad to say.

If the rules compendium means that I get the cool environment rules from the environmental series (especially ship rules from stormwrack) and some of the rules from HoH, then that means I will have to buy less books. I am looking forward to seeing what is in this.
