D&D 5E D&D strategy: now actually makes sense!

True, but a little more openness along the road wouldn't have hurt. Aside from a few tip-of-the-slongues, the DMGuild and OGL were essentially blind-sides to the larger community. A little more "Dragon+ isn't a place to get new game rules, but we are working on something" type of retorts, rather than silence, might have calmed nerves down a bit more.
They did say "We're working on it" for things like the conversion guides, and that didn't stop people from complaining that they weren't available NOW. If they had hinted that they had this in the works, I think we'd actually be hearing a lot more "FINALLY, after A YEAR AND A HALF, what TOOK them so LONG?"--rather than "Oh cool, this is a great idea!"

I can't come up with a counter-argument.

As others have noted, more would have people chomping at the bit and complaining about how long it took, which I don't think would really have been a win.

There is an old adage: under-promise and over-deliver. Keeping people with moderate expectations means that when you deliver more, they are pleasantly surprised.

But, really, one of the WotC crew (I can't remember which) told us, *ages* ago, that they were going OGL. Since he wasn't Mearls, everyone took it with a grain of salt. They did speak of setting up a system for sharing of fan content, too, which game me the impression as something more than mere policy. I admit I am surprised (and pleased) that they went OGL, and I figured they'd end up with some half-baked proprietary setup for sharing - I am glad they instead went with an established provider of pdfs.
