D&D Tactics

Apparently, I've been asleep at the switch ... I didn't realize this game was coming until reading about it in Dragon 353.

Sounds like exactly what I want in a D&D game ... 40 hours of party-based play where I can choose party composition of up to six characters, levels up to 20, alternate side quests, and accurate tactical D&D combat.

Only ... why is it only for the PSP?!? :(

I want it for PC, darn it! I'm not going to buy a PSP for one game. If it were XBox, I might be tempted ... there are other games there that interest me that thus far I haven't been willing to buy the entire game system for.

Grrr. Stupid console-only games.

My thoughts exactly.

I wish there were more turn-based PC D&D games.

Opposite problem here. I have a portable, but it's the wrong one. I'm hoping they adapt it to DS as I find the PSP an overly expensive bloated piece of hardware. (Which, unfortunately, is getting a LOT of games I want) :(

It's been moved back to the middle of May.

As to why it's for the PSP, the developer of the game, Kuju, is apparently mostly a PSP developer these days, and they pitched the game idea to Atari (from that article I read, they called it "D&D meets X-com), and Atari said yes.

I wouldn't expect a DS version. The DS is basically a portable N64. The PSP is basically a portable PS2. The PSP can generally do DS games (like say, the upcoming Puzzle Quest), since it's much more powerful, but the reverse is not the case. But then again, the DS got Hannah Montana, and the PSP didn't, so it evens out.

I would love to see something like the old Gold Box games for the DS. That could be done pretty easily, I think (the DS is about as powerful as early 90s era PCs)

Considering some of the graphics the DS can push (and dual-screen, too), I would wager it's considerably more powerful than the PCs the Gold Box games released on. I'm pretty sure even the GBA is more powerful than those PCs, actually, at least as a gaming platform - the SNES it seems able to comfortably mimic certainly was.

Well, yeah. However, the AD&D games that were meant to run on PCs with similar specs to the DS weren't very good, so I didn't mention those. (The Dark Sun game and its sequel - Wake of the Ravager). But yeah, the Gold Box games were on late 80s PCs and even on the C-64 (the first one, I think anyway), which is why I said the DS could easily do it.

edit: Anyway, one of the better upcoming DS RPGs is pretty much a Wizardry clone (that series is actually still popular in Japan, but this is a copy, really), which made me thing of the Gold Box Games. It would be pretty cool if the top screen could be used for the 3D view, while the bottom would be like the marching order of the characters (and would be used for the tactical combat portion)

So, did you are didn't you like the Dark Sun games? Just curious as it wasn't obvious to me.

And, I have a DS as well, much prefer it to PSP which can get waaaaaay too expensive with special movies for it and my DVD player, and would LOVE to see some DND games (gold box or the Dark Sun ones) released for the DS! That would be cool!

What is the name of the wizardry game coming out for DS? And I agree with your assessment of how they could do a game on the DS and it would be fun!

Have a good one! Take care!

Ah, gotcha. Actually, five of the Gold Box games (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Champions of Krynn, Secret of the Silver Blades and Death Knights of Krynn) released on the C-64.

I know because a) I have them all for it and b) my family upgraded to an IBM 386 to play Pools of Darkness. :D
