Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a co-op boardgame where you play a Dungeons & Dragons character class and take on iconic D&D monsters like beholders, dragons, and mimics. Announced by Ravensburger, the game is coming out August 10th and retails at $29.99. It's a special edition of the Horrified board game franchise and features 5 D&D classes and 4 classic monsters.

Players can choose from the bard, cleric, fighter, rogue, or wizard; and they will be opposed by dragons, beholders, mimics, and displacer beasts underneath the city of Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms. In each game, the players will confront at least two of the four monsters.

The game also features puzzles, obstacles, and items (such as the Orb of Dragonkind) from D&D lore. It uses a d20--the die prominently featured in D&D's mechanics--in a departure from Horrified's usual task resolution.

Heh, I just made my group play the new Builders of Baldur's Gate board game from Wizkids. We had fun, but it was somewhat complicated and off-putting for a couple of them. Perhaps D&D Horrified (or Horrified D&D) will be more their speed. For $30, its worth a shot!
our group and especially our kids really like:
  • Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Begins, Cooperative Fantasy Board Game
  • Lords of Waterdeep
and of course the original 3 adventure campaign games (Castle Ravenloft, Legend of Drizzt, Wrath of Ashardalon)

the locations and key items to take the monsters down are specific to the map. But we have only played the original.

Yeah. The Cryptids version of Horrified, for example, includes the Chupacabra. Beating it requires you gather goats, which don't exist in the Universal Monsters set.

Can't find this listed on Amazon's site for a pre-order. Is it being restricted in some way to Target? What about hobby retail stores?

I bought the Ravenloft boardgame when it came out10-15 years ago. I didnt like it. It was a little too fiddly for me. I want something a little more straight forward, and this might be it. I just wonder how much replay ability this would have though.
Very different games. Frankly, I think those D&D boardgames (I bought them all for the cheap miniatures) are basically mediocre Hero Quest knock-offs, with very little strategy or variation between games.

Horrified is much more of a strategic cooperative boardgame in the vein of Pandemic, though simpler. A game will typically take around an hour.

I played Arkham Horror a handful of times, and the setup took almost as long as the game. It's too tedious and complex for my tastes. I'm definitely more interested in something that is quickly set up, easier and less time consuming to play for those nights were in between sessions of our regular RPGs.

I love Arkham Horror, but those games are at the extreme end of cooperative games, for sure. Each one is a full evening's commitment, and you're right, the set-up is extensive.

Horrified will take maybe 10-20 minutes to read through the rules and set up the first time you play, but after that should only take a few minutes to set up each game.
