D&D Word Problem Quiz

#10 Ninjoe tosses 3 shurikens at Sam Urai. Sam attempts to knock them out of the air with his katana before they strike him. (Note, this same sitaution could be applied to Aragon and a thrown Uruk Hai dagger.)[/B]
Sam has taken the total defense action (or, he has earlier attacked an opponent using the Expertise feat), representing the extent to which he uses all of the resources at his disposal (including his blade) to avoid blows. Ninjoe makes a normal attack roll against Sam's (improved) AC, he misses, and the DM opts to describe the event especially colorfully.

This is probably the safest and most sensible way to describe it, and the only way that reflects the rules accurately. If I were a more liberal DM, I might allow Sam to ready an attack action to strike at incoming missiles, which have an AC of about 34 (10, +8 for being Fine [that is, smaller than six inches], a roughly +8 dodge bonus for moving quickly through the air, and a roughly +8 ad-hoc bonus for attempting to hit a single volley that contains three separate elements). If he hit, he'd avoid them.

...Let's assume Ntyin Armur's middle name is Medium or Heavy...

For the record, Nytin's middle name is "Shynin". But your assumptions were understandable.

BTW, I am floored by your explanation of #2 as well. Keep 'em coming! When you are done, I may just put them all in a binder, slap a d20 logo on it, and sell it. I've paid more for less. ;)

Careful with ambiguous terms :)

'somersault' is used in two ways - a roll, or a flip. I believe - although I could be wrong - that the 'roll' sense is an Americanism, since I've only ever seen it used that way in books by American authors. To me, a 'backward somersault' means jumping up, turning 360 degrees in mid-air heels-over-head, and landing on one's feet again.

A handspring would involve one's hands making contact with the ground halfway through, which would make dagger-throwing tricky...

You are correct, Sir. That is want I meant.
