d20 Apocalypse vs. Darwin's World

First Post
Given that d20 Apocalypse has not been added to the MSRD (yet, I think we should start a mailing campaign to Andy Smith at WotC so they can add Apocalypse and Cyberscape, but that's another thread), I would like to know how good would Darwin's World be to help me have OGC content that allows me the (more or less) same options as d20 Apocalypse. I remember reading that the books complemented each other pretty well, but if I want OGC would DW give me what I need to fully replace and ignore d20 Apocalypse?

Thanks.

Fancy that. I was just looking at Darwin's World and thinking to myself how well DW covers traditional Post-Apoc archetypes.

What d20 Apoc does is hone in on certain "flavors" of post apoc action with specific archetypes. But yeah, I think that DW is a pretty good starting point for any OGC PA action. The Open Content statement pretty much seems to focus on class (ext) descriptions.

I think that DW is a masterful work. I'm glad that I have the 2nd Edition in my collection.

That being said... I find it rather depressing, even for a PA world. Almost *too* realistic.

If I ever run a PA game again I will mine it heavily for ideas however. But I think I would use the 4th Edition Gamma World rules as my system.

I see d20 apoc as more of a tool set and Darwins world as a campaign setting. Basically, they don't stack, they overlap.
I would use DW if I were making stuff that fits into that specific flavor of PA. If I was creating stuff they was different, say a furturistic setting, I would stick more with d20 apoc.
Why not get both?

I just looked at DW again recently, and one thin's sticks in me craw. Aye, I know it's traditional for mutants t' have drawbacks, but still, I dislike t' idea that mutant abilities be paid for with drawafts. I don't totally hate it, since t' medical incompatibility thin' a REAL drawbacks, but still, I like d20 apoc's take (and Chaositech's, for that matter) a bit better.

You don't have to take defects (drawbacks) if you spend the feats to remove them.

You're looking at DW 2 right?

Um, yeah.

That you can "do the right thing" isn't my issue. Philosophically, it's that you can do the "wrong thing" AFAIC. Drawbacks always strike me as being like "Wimpy", always wanting to pay me Tuesday for a hamburger today. That he could pay me today doesn't alleviate my concerns. ;)

And as a side point, I thought that the feat only let you lessen the severity of the drawback.

For my game, sure! For publication, d20 Apocalypse is not open, so I can't use it, which is why I'm checking into DW and the tools it can give me compared to those in d20 Apocalypse.

I don't fully understand what you mean above. :) Are you saying that the defects are not bad enough to offset the mutation?

You can take feat(s) at 1st level to remove all or some of your defects. After 1st, you can still take feats to lesson them, but never remove them completly.

In short, you can create a super mutant that is all mutation and no defects, but you'll lose all your intial feats (background/character) for balance purposes.

That's cool if it's not your thing, I just wanted to claify that.
