d20 backlash??

I think that BRP is wildly innapropriate for Cthulhu and was always a poor fit of the Runequest system to a genre in which is dosn't work. I suspect more Cthulhu fans actually play d20 than BRP these days. I never anyone claim they play BRP except online, while I can easily find half a dozen d20 games in my local area.

Personally I prefer BRP to D20 for CoC, even though BRP certainly has its problems... my purely anedoctal evidence (in Italy) is that BRP is way more popular for CoC.

You're both crazy. Give me some Slaad Soup any day!

Slaad Soup? Bleah! That's as bad as sliced gelatinous cube! Everyone knows that Slaad is a dish best served cold, torn rather than cut, and with both crutons and blue cheese dressing.

Next you'll be comparing Slaad Soup favorably to Carrion Crullers.

But it is ridiculous to think that one approach is suitable for all games.

For example, it is no surprise that d20 CoC did not succeed. As much as I admire what is in that book (esp. the GM advice section), the classic BRP approach is far more appropriate for Cthulhu.
Though I'm not a fan of CoC in any incarnation, it would have been helpful if Chaosium had an aggressive marketing plan for core rulebook designed and published by WotC. After all, it was a one-book deal to begin with.

Many were expecting Chaosium to release a Pulp Cthulhu campaign setting product for CoC d20, but they backed out of it, opting to make dual-stat products instead.

IOW, it would have caught on if there had been more support for the core rulebook.

In summary, I disagree with you. Whether it is d20-labeled or not, the SRD rules system can be suitable for all genres, be it personal use or commercial publishing.

I think the lack of support for d20 CoC is a darn shame. That is an AWESOME book, one that I've gotten huge use of.

I spent the afternoon in my FLGS, browsing around...

and there's a LOT of utter crap in the d20 market. I mean, seriously. It just goes on, shelf after shelf of it. Crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap....

It's embarrassing.

And then there's the Iron Kingdoms Campaign Guide. Hurrah for Privateer Press.

There's plenty of good stuff too, it's true, but gawd the amount of crap is staggering.

And of course game stores being run by freaks doesn't help much, either. My buddy was looking for Grim Tales and got told (very dismissively and authoritatively) that it wasn't coming out for another few months. Then I got sneered at for liking d20 stuff (which seems to happen a lot in game stores, I'm not sure why) and you know what? Not the greatest experience I ever had.

Of course, I then dropped $100 on stuff, so I guess the joke's on me...

Ditto here. That being said, when we play BRP (Elric, CoC) we expect high character mortality and in a sense we delight in it. Very different from D20 play which is designed around character balance and high survivorship. For that reason, we prefer BRP as the Cthulhu vehicle of choice --- even if it is kinda wonky.

If you have no interest in debating it, you shouldn't bring it up, throw out innacurate and ignorant statements and then expect to walk away from it. ...

What's with the snarky attitude? :\

It was quite clear from my subsequent post that I recognized the problem with my earlier assertion.

Chill out.
