As you can tell, the new book's smaller than the original--not everything from the original book is in here. In some cases the omissions are obvious (most/all of the Dark Matter critters have already appeared elsewhere, and the new book doesn't reprint the Alternity FX rules stuff from the original, for instance), and in other cases sections were slimmed or eliminated based on their importance to the overall tome.

Disappointing, but not unexpected. Hopefully there will be something in the book (or a web enhancement) that tweaks the cryptids that appeared in the Menace Manual so that they are more true to the source material. As for the FX rules, let's just say WotC has done HeapThaumaturgist a huge favor. ;)

The Men in Black in the Menace Manual are different from the ones in Dark*Matter too.

It may be time to light a fire under Sleep Dep Creations to get the next installment of HeapT's SFX series too. At this rate, 2012 is going to come and go before we get all the tools we need to bring d20 Modern Dark*Matter to life. ;)

Please attribute my impatience to my enthusiam for the SFX series. :)

This is exactly what I thought this book would be. Ah well, if it helps the d20Mod line and spreads D*M goodness to the masses, I'm not complaining.

IT .... LIVES ...

Let us just say that it depends on how quickly mail travels from my side of the pond to the opposite side of the pond.

And I'm in-process writing another installment. Actually, I've gotten quite a few freelance deals set up here in the last few days so I should be a busy little beaver. My eventual goal is to also write some adventures ... for a certain genre ... either for the D20M website at Wizards or for PDF publication with some of my most favoritest PDF publishers.

Then ... I'd be a happy happy man.

(That and I think a genre-focused series of adventures would be popular with those interested in 'that' genre.)

How much is Dark Matter like Cthulhu? Considering that Monte worked on both, i would think it has a lot of thematic overlap. Not that i mind, it's my favorite theme...scary gooey stuff.

D*M is more akin to Delta Green, I guess. In D*M, there is some hope, and the PCs are more competent. Also, it's not 100% abject terror. Some of it is just "weird".

Basically, the conspiracies and "what's really going on" are fathomable. :)
