d20 Dark*Matter: ongoing review

Roudi said:
No, my d20 Modern core book has no index. If an index appeared in other books, then perhaps mine is a printing error.

I don't own Urban Arcana.

I'll get to the magic question once I find my book again. There are Vancian spells and psionic powers as per the standard d20 Modern FX rules. I have to double-check the classes, though, as I don't recall any of them having spellcasting abilities (I think the book still relied on the Mage, Acolyte, Telepath, and Battlemind for FX access).

And for Sketchpad:

SFX Skills: Diabolism
SFX Skills: Enochian Theurgy
They're two entries in a very tight skill 'n' feat magic system.
Interesting ... I may have to check these out :) Thanks Roudi :)

Only the first page of the character sheet?
Where did you get "first page" from? My book has a complete character sheet, and nothing afterwards.

Sketchpad, glad I could help.

Urizen... you serious? It's just an RPG book, for crying out loud. You sure it's not some sort of prank?

I wish I was joking. Not the case. Pretty strange stuff. I know that Clyde Lewis, the founder of Ground Zero radio who's organization is featured in the book, has had things like this happen to him in the past. He was doing a story on an alien sighting in the west Utah desert and was told by a "Man in Black" to stop it. he didn't, his car was bombed.

You can read about it here: http://www.clydelewis.com/dis/grey/grey.htm

Hmm. Weird. As I stated earlier, the index are found on pages 382-384. The second page of the character sheets in my book is on page 381.

Dude, you got a defective product.

Are you sure? Because my d20M have an index after the character sheets (pages 382-384). It should also have an index of tables, and designers' profiles.
With this talk of no index, I checked mine. I have the index in the same place that REG has.

I've been pretty busy lately (as Urizen said, I've got a book to edit). I'll be able to post more thorough impressions in a couple of days.

I was surprised to find this in my local store yesterday and picked it up on the spot. It looks pretty good, I must say. I like the cover texture, and there's full color insides. I never had the first book, so I can't comment on how much of the art or text is reprinted.

For someone like me who never got the old one, this is a great buy. Only the first chapter is rules, maybe about thirty pages of the book, and everything else is setting info. If I ever end up running a DM game I'll probably ignore a lot of the rules- I don't what to have PC Fraal, for instance. Most of the classes and magic looks similar to what was in the Polyhedron update, but I haven't done a side-by-side comparison yet.

Overall, it's a great book for people like me who are new to the setting. Those with the Alternity books will want to look through the new one and make their own decision whether to buy.

Surprised?

Oh, that's right. Only the Wizards' messageboards been buzzing over d20 Dark*Matter for over the past month.

I'm itching to pick the book up as soon as I get a Borders book coupon.
