D20 Future (SRD) what's (not so) good and what can be improved (and how)?

How DARE WotC make all this material, and then make a bunch of it free, and not have MY campaign in mind?
How could they even consider such a thing?

Where's that sarcasm tag?
I don't think that anyone is complaining about the material being free, just that the material can be improved on. The reason for this thread is to improve/expand and possibly replace some of the rules/systems.

So what if 100% of the D20 Future rules don't work perfectly with my setting? They give me the groundwork to make my own that do, and that's a wonderful thing. :-)
What would you change?

The worst thing of all about the xeno-races being left out of the SRD is if a 3rd party wanted to publish an adventure for say, the Star Law or Star Drive setting, they could only use humans. What fun is that? :(

What is worse, is that they are retaining their Star Frontiers and Star*Drive IP, but they have already said there are no immediate (read: not likely) plans to produce any supplements for d20 Future.

So basically it is up to fans to either get their hands on old stuff and play with that, or put on the net the conversions and info for all the Star Frontiers and Star*Drive stuff and hope WOTC doesn't send the men in black after them (read: likely).

Several of the posts are complaining about the AMOUNT of free material...
Which I still find boggling...
They're GIVING the stuff away (which they don't have to do) and people are complaining that they're not giving ENOUGH away....

:boggle:

We can always hope that there's more stuff OGLed...
I personally would have loved to have seen the player races of Star*Drive OGLed, i didn't think it would happen, guess i was right. Not complaining jst a tiny bit disappointed, not because i want it for free, but because i want it (no one else is using the material).

I think this is a valid point. If they have no intention of using those races they should release them to the general public. Set the Dralasites FREE!

3rd Party d20 companies with a passion for a given setting have shown the willingness in the past to LICENSE that setting, providing some cash for WOTC.

Given all that they already provide for free to the 3rd party community, it seems a little ungrateful to turn around and ask why they don't ALSO release a bunch of IP that they could make money on.

Dragonlance and Ravenloft got licensed... why not Star Drive?

So its hard to blame them- business is business and WOTC is already more generous than most.

Hi all! :)

Was anyone else amazed by the following:

1 Megaton Nuke...16d8 Damage.

I just don't think WotC have a good handle on how to integrate modern (and future) weapons into d20.

I can see the half-orc barbarian daring the 1 Megaton Nuke "Take your best shot!"... ;-)

From my initial skim through the rules I was appalled at the space combat rules - it seems as if they haven't bothered to really think things through and merely used a variation of the melee combat rules. I'd rather they hadn't bothered at all than come up with this silliness. Are there no good OGL rules they could have used instead, or as a base?

I just couldn't believe this.

I liked the space combat rules quite a bit.

Much preferable to the fanboy fav systems that require an excel spreadsheet for ship design and a t-square for combat.

Everyone seems obsessed with "realism" in space combat games.

Now for a minute we'll ignore that the "silly" rules they used (the regular combat system) are also pretty silly when depicting melee combat and that no one seems to have a big problem with that.

You know... "ok... I swing... now he swings... now I swing again... now he swings..." and the "ow that's the third time he's hit me with that 2-H sword, this is starting to get serious"... THAT combat system.

Totally "silly". However, give me that over real combat which would be "I am a mighty warrior, I fought in the crusades, I have killed a hundred men. Hey, its a peasant with a bow... AHHHHHH Im shot in the shoulder! Im bleeding... must use molten tar to staunch the wound..."

Then you die of an infection three days later.

No, let's put aside for a moment that the combat system is based on playability and not "realism".

First thing I want is someone to explain to me the "reality" of space combat.

You know, last I read, there had never been one. Not a single ship or weapon designed for such a combat, and not a single engagement in the history of mankind.

But please, tell us all how it should go down in "reality".

It basically sounds like people were expecting some new crunchy system and feel "cheated" that the rules they already know were used.

Or that they didnt rip off the "realistic" system from {insert the name of your ideal science fiction game here- usually Classic Traveller or Alternity}.

Chuck, reaching for another flag for piling on.

PS The game is good guys, give it a chance instead of slamming it after a "cursory read through".

PSS These conversations really remind me of the knee jerk reactions people had to d20M the more I read them.

You know "what?!?!? no 20 level classes?!?!? what are these base class thingies. They're teh suck that's what they are!"

And "what?!?!? they use the D&D magic system in the modern world instead of {insert the name of your ideal gritty horror game magic rules here usually Call of Cthulhu}?!?!?!?"
