d20 Future -- the sample settings revealed!

Star Law

unfortunately, the Star Law / Star Frontiers campaign model makes no mention of the Sathar at all. :(

One question in particular --- what sort of different spins are put on Star Law vs. Star*Drive? Do they present the former as more...I dunno...old-school space opera, and the latter as more of a hard science campaign? Cause I could see that working.
the Star Law campaign model seems a lot more focused on paramilitary / law enforcement, whereas the Star Drive campaign is painted as being a lot more open-ended.

Are there new enemies in her, like monsters etc?
other than the previously-mentioned Klick, not really. there's two templates (extraterrestrial and space creature) given, and an example of each. (extraterrestrial large monstrous spider and space troll.) there is a list of creatures from d20 Modern, the Menace Manual, Urban Arcana, and the D&D Monster Manual that would make good alien critters.

How long is the space ship section, and specifically what are the space comabt rules like?
space travel is in Chapter 6 (Traveler Science), pages 98-107 (9 pages). Starships are in Chapter 7, pages 108-145 (37 pages).

starship combat is very, very similar to personal combat (down to AoOs and surprise rounds, flat-footedness, etc.) i haven't done more than skim it yet, but i'm already getting the feeling i may end up using d20 Mecha from GoO for starships.

And is Dimension X something like Sliders or Quantum Leap or Doctor Who?
sort of. there's a big huge multiverse of alternate realities out there, and they're slowing being destroyed one by one by some unknown force. the PCs are members of an organization trying to discover the reason for the destruction, as well as trying to save people from universes that are being destroyed, and protecting stable universes from dimensional raiders.

When I designed From the Dark Heart of Space I had three words in mind: Cthulhu in Space. Basically, the concept is that there is this massive, evil force that was awakened by a deep space exploration expedition that is now spreading its invisible tendrils throughout the galaxy.
the Void reminded me of the Evil from the movie Fifth Element.

Nice setting but what about a Cyberpunk 2020 or Shadowrun setting?

Aries

Well, they only had room for so many settings, but the cybergear rules are still there. My suggestion is either to buy such a campaign setting elsewhere or read a few shadowrun books and/or adventures to get a feel for the setting style.

PS could someone tell me what the balance technique for cybergear is?

The limit for the amount of Cyberware that a character can have is 1 + their Con Mod with a minimum value of 0. There is a feat called Cybertaker that will increase this limit by 1 each time it is taken.

Hmm, it's very exciting that d20 Future is updating material for Star Frontiers. That make's me interested in a product I otherwise would have ignored.

Questions, if I have d20 Future, will this be enough to play a SF game? If not, what else is required? d20 Modern? the D&D PHB? The old Star Frontiers set?

According to other posts, you need the d20 Modern book, but none else. I guess the Menace Manual would be quite helpful, too. Urban Arcana might have a few pieces to be looted, but you really only need d20 Modern.

d20 Future is a supplement to d20 Modern. It uses the d20 Modern core ruleset as the foundation, while d20 Future provides the additional rules to create and play a futuristic/sci-fi game.

Think HERO System Rulebook and Star HERO.

Unfortunately this doesn't tell me much; is there any reason why a Con 15 character wouldn't immediately get two pieces of cyberware (not including Wealth costs)?

i guess that's sort of like asking why a D&D character wouldn't immediately go out and buy magic items if he had the gold.

there are some drawbacks to cybernetics. you suffer an additional 50% damage from electricity damage. external cybernetics are subject to attacks as if they were worn objects. whenever you fail a massive damage check, there's a 70% chance your cybernetics may be damaged, destroyed, or worse.

other than that, the main drawback is cost. most cyberware isn't even restricted or licensed, it seems.
