D&D 4E d20 Modern 4E - I want it!

One possibility for the (Ability) Hero idea is to have them as the Modern equivalent of races. This would allow 6 "races" each with their own built in "racial" qualities and "racial" feats.

I was also thinking that weapons would look like this:

Code:
Weapon Prof. Damage Range Cost Weight Category Properties
M16A4 3	2d6	30/60 ?? ?? 8.5 lb.	Assault	Semi Auto, Burst Fire, Two Handed
AK-47 2	2d8	25/50 ?? ?? 8.4 lb. Assault Semi Auto, Automatic, Two Handed

Using ability-score base classes as "races" only works in an all-human modern setting. If your modern setting includes any non-human races (such as moreaus, shadowkind, aliens, etc.) then it doesn't work. Of course you could say that the base-classes represent "subraces" of a sort, but that kind of takes me back to just using them as categories for talent trees that can be taken with feats.

Why should a d20 Modern game have to have classes at all? The designers have hinted around that making a "classless" version of 4e shouldn't be all that difficult, so why not make Modern that classless version? It seems like the main differentiation among classes is in the selection of powers available to each class, and the other stats are pretty consistent across classes. Each character could have access to one power source by default (depending on concept), and take powers from other power sources by spending a feat. I'd think that other class differences (like HP progression) could also be modified by taking feats.

In a way this is kind of what they already encourage in the current d20 Modern game - you're encouraged to multiclass among the 6 base classes a lot. This just removes the descriptor and gives the player a little more control over the whole build.

OK only read 2 pages, but haven't seen this yet. From the 2 page Rouse GAMA interview:

"Under the Modern license, there will be a license for non-fantasy roleplaying settings. The details of that haven’t been released yet. We don’t have a product line that that will support, but in the coming weeks we’ll be talking about plans for late 2009 and 2010 where we’ll be refreshing the d20 Modern or the Urban Arcana setting."

Heroic: Die Hard

John Mclane fights terrorists, but does so by remaining elusive, and a strike and dissapear type of guy. Generally gets his butt kicked when he actually encounters them. (Ouch glass!)

Paragon: Die Hard 2 and 3

John McClane again fights Terrorists, but this time has a few more face to face action scenes... (IE can take a lot more damage... He's even at the level where he can fall off of high stuff and survive... that stupid crane at the end of 3...)

Epic: Live Free Die Hard...

Again... Terrorists.. and quasi post apocalyptic NY... This time he's high enough level that he can make a balance check to stay on the wing of a fighter jet as it's crashing... Among other crazy non human seeming stunts... (Plus he has high enough will defense to resist that stupid mac guy...)

:P
I want to be able to rate posts, so I can give this one five stars.

I might actually go for a 4th Ed Modern (never got into 3.x Modern) -- been playing Persona 3 FES over the past couple of weeks and have been thinking that it might actually translate really well into 4th Ed. Would definitely be something to try out, at least.

I am still eagerly waiting for anything. Recently I wondered about creating space combat rules with the 4E framework. Somehow I feel that using roles and something like the Minion/Regular/Elite/Solo denominations of monsters can be applied to starship combat, too. But I don't know yet how.

I guess Solos could be heavy starships (think: Star Destroyer) and Minions weak starfighters (think: TIE Fighter) ...

I LOVED d20Modern. For me it's the ultimate expression of the d20 rules-set.

Although in the end I didn't get to run it as much as I wanted to, the core rulebook inspired me to build the framework of an entire campaign, from scratch. No other system from AD&D onwards has managed that. 90% of that work remains cloistered on my hard drive and if/when a new Modern game comes out, I will certainly be going back to it and making a game happen.

I'm unsure as to how well the core design tenets of 4ed will translate to the modern genre, but if the skill with which the original d20 rules were translated to d20M is repeated, it'll doubtless be a helluva game. I can't wait to find out!

This idea has completely made my day.

Yeah, I think the main thing with vehicular combat is

1) Keep it constantly in motion

2) Keep it to scale.

2 works well with minion fighters and solo warships.

1 has trouble getting accomplished with a battlemap-style play without feeling a bit forced and pointless.
