d20 Modern Armor Proficiency - A Question?

Nice!

You're right about your points above, and I'm glad you weren't offended. Hey, being able to disagree is what discussion is all about. So, what about the alternative armor proficiency rules? ;)

Has anyone considered any house rules regarding the archaic armors and how they interact with ballistic attacks? Considering that heavy metal armors went out of style due to guns, I'm considering house ruling that archaic armors only give 1/2 of their armor value against balistic attacks. In a campaign with magic, I would have to come up with rules for how enhancement bonuses affected this....at the very least, the enhancement bonus wouldn't be halved. Possibly it would reduce the penalty.

I don't think that's necessary. Archaic armor in D20 Modern isn't still made out of dried pig flesh and iron or steel. The description of plate mail in D20 Modern only refers to its archaic design, not construction. IMO, plate mail in D20 Modern isn't made out of iron or lead, but modern alloys. The description states that it provides a great deal of protection, and the only way it can effectively do that is if its construction keeps up with the times.

Truly archaic armor would indeed suffer under fire. kreynolds is also correct, however. Modern metallurgy and forging techniques lend a great deal of strength to modern versions of archaic armor.

This is one reason why armor as protection from damage, not as a sort of "deflection" device, works better. Too bad d20 Modern dropped the concept altogether, though compatibility is important too.

Exactly. I just think that one would be incorrect to assume that "Archaic" means "hundreds of years old, found in the dirt, warm butter to bullets". Given the defense bonuses granted by archaic armor, I think its clear that its made of modern materials. Heck, it would have to be. :)
