Well, a modern litch might not be an animate skeleton. He might opt to transfer his conciousness into an undying robot form instead! There might not even be a reason for him to be a spellcaster if he can manage to master the requisite technology, after all sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
But, you asked for a Modern litch, and not a Future one. Saddly, I have neither. I just do concepts.

Yikes, the robot lich is a nice curveball to throw at a party. I suppose it depends on the nature of the transformation - is it important to have a meat body, undead or otherwise, for the lich to use?

I was needing a character for a story and thought a modern version of a lich might be interesting. I decided to make him a 1930s pulp style mad scientist type of lich. Thanks for the responses.

When I think of brain taping and cloning, it is fairly easy to envision someone using said technology to be effectively be immortal. However, how does this apply to this topic? Brain taping is how. Record the pysche of a person and reassemble it on a hard drive. Recreate the body ala termiantor style and insert hard drive into head of said body. Hit the 'boot/power' button and presto, instant lich!

or in other words, recreate the character as a d20 future robot...

or break out d20 mecha and stuff him in so life preserving suit/armor ;)

hmm, maybe d20 cyberscape is the way to go. either using total organ replacement cyberware, or the necrotics variant: total flesh replacement :p

hell, the latter requires the "user" to be hit with a inflict wounds spell if he is to be healed from any damage taken. that, some mage/acolyte levels and your good to go more or less ;)

hmm, one can still be affected by mind effects and similar as one isnt a true undead. the nervous system is intact and functioning...

still, its very close :D

The biggest problem is that d20 Modern cuts off spell casting at 5th level... without the higher level spells, can you even create a lich? It is a neat idea, I might try and use it once I finally start running a pulp era game.
