Thomas Heywood is troubled man. Growing up, his father, Matthew, pushed Thomas very hard to excel at sports and school. Despite being talented, Thomas could rarely live up to his father’s exacting standards, though. He was regularly yelled at and beaten. He knew that his father just wanted the best for him. Matthew had come up from nothing and made himself a successful middle-class police detective. Despite that, his father’s harsh treatment built up a well of resentment in him.
Matthew told his son that he would go to college and then he, too, would become a policeman. Thomas liked the idea of getting into law enforcement and admired his father’s highly decorated career, but hated the idea of being told what his career was going to be. He started entertaining the idea of joining the FBI. While in college, Matthew died of cancer. Thomas was heartbroken and glad and glad at the same time over this. He has yet to come to terms with his father. He still hears his father’s voice in his head chastising him when he makes a mistake or when he doesn’t do as well as he could. He also finds himself talking to his father when he is alone.
Thomas excelled at his studies and made a name for himself as a bright scholar of criminology while at school. Still determined to get into the FBI rather than local law enforcement, Thomas did something drastic. The FBI was on the trail of a serial killer that had eluded them for sometime. The trail was cold and they were desperate. Thomas befriended one of the agents on the case while still in school. Since he had expressed an interest in the FBI, he managed to get the agent to let him take a look at the case files. Thomas used the information he read in the file to set up and frame another man for the crime. He then “caught the killer.” The man had several prior convictions and despite the fact that there were some holes in the case, there was enormous pressure to close it and they were overlooked. Thomas became a huge hero and his shot at getting a job at the FBI was assured.
Thomas wonders when lying in bed at night how far he would go to prove himself to the ghost of his father. Framing the innocent man is not the only deception he has wrought, only the worst, so far. It haunts him and he rarely sleeps well. He tends to drink heavily when not on duty to try and drown out his feelings.
Thomas has a mother, Mary, and a sister, Jane, that he keeps semi-regular contact with. He has also been dating a girl, Vivian, off and on lately.
Thomas is 26, 6’ tall and 190 lbs. He has short brown hair and brown eyes. He is decent looking and is meticulous about his appearance.
