Which Common Die is the Most Aesthetically Pleasing?

Boo. While it's true that the antiprism duals aren't that evocative, I harshly disagree with limiting ourselves to the platonic solids. The Catalan Solids are just as cool, and give us more interesting numbers to work with. d24s? d30s? d12s with rhombus shaped faces? what's not to love?

I don't think you understand. You're not giving up any control by going to higher die types, as long as things are scaled the same. +1 on a d10 is the same as +2 on a d20; +2 on a d10 is the same as +4 on a d20.

The difference is, the d20 also gives you the option of giving +3, because maybe you're better than a +2 but not quite a +4. With a d10, you have to pick +1 or +2.

There are certainly reasons to favor smaller dice, such as availability (in the case of d6s) or simpler math (larger die types require larger numbers to be manipulated), or ease of rolling (d100s can be annoying) but purely from the standpoint of probability and letting skill/circumstance affect the roll, a smaller die is strictly inferior to a larger die.

I do understand, but to make skill work on a d20, the modifiers must be huge if you want to reduce the imprtance of the random factor, and therefor things quickly get harder to calculate. On a lower die, the modifiers can be much lower and have a larger impact. Personally I don't care for the larger modifiers that come with a d20. Also most d20 games, in my opinion, start out with very low modiers. So randomness is incredibly important early on in the game.

The humble d12, no question. And this isn't a pity vote either: it may be infrequently called upon, but like a good suit that only comes out on really special occasions, the strut of the d20 across the battle-mat puts all the other dice to shame. :)
