D20 Spelljammer

So they're coming out with Spelljammer in the next issue of Dragon...

Funny, the news page says its going to be in Dungeon . I hope you're correct, however, since otherwise I would have to buy a copy of Dungeon just to get the new rules.

I wonder how this will affect the official Spelljammer site.

Yup, it's gonna be in Dungeon #92. But if you ask me, money spent on Dungeon is always money well spent. ;)

Hey squirrel-guy! Nice to see you back again. Sounds like I need to get a copy of that issu too...

Man's best friend

Hey Kesh! I wish I'd known you were here, I would've brought one of my dog's Milk-Bones for ya! ;)

Heck, as far as Dungeon goes, I subscribe to it and I don't even play D&D. So that's got to say something right there...

My problem with spelljammer is the miss-use of science.

Concepts such as mass and weight are commonly misused in our every day lives and as a teacher I have to combat that.

Now when I go into a store and someone asks me about gravity. I know they don't want a 50-minute lecture on Einstein vs Newton's view but the misuse of some of these terms is kind of like someone running their fingers down a chalkboard to me.

I guess if I were a historian I'd feel the same way about how the Middle Ages are portrayed in these games but I am sufficiently ignorant to not care.

N... no GIFF?????

<moment of silence>

No... I can't accept that! Giff and Giant Space Hamsters are part of the FUN of Spelljammer... Purposefully stripping away stuff like that would be a major problem, alienating the people who DO like that aspect. It'd be SO much easier to just make a nice "D&D Adventures in Space" hardcover, and incorporate whatever new feel they want it to have, and let the DM decide which aspects he wants and doesn't want. By going out of your way to limit what I consider the "good parts"... it just sounds like a comic book writer completely changing a title to suit his own needs.

Granted, we haven't seen it yet... and at least the Giff is on the official Spelljammer page... <wink wink>

Well, consider that Spelljammer wasn't exactly a big seller for TSR. Its goofy aspects were certainly what kept my gaming group away from it. I saw a used copy at a local bookshop for $7 complete and just thought "meh, its still spelljammer".

Now spelljammer without the stupid stuff does appeal to me and I'll get Dragon (or Dungeon? ) and check it out (of course I buy those every month anyway but...)

Thanks. :P Just bring one of those Macho Stix© that PirateCat and (cntxt) mentioned instead. ;)

I'm thinking more and more about subscribing to Dungeon, but I had to squeeze just to get cash for Dragon. And now I need to upgrade some software... *sigh* Damn college job...

All of these posts from people who *gasp* didn't like the original Spelljammer is just weirding me out beyond belief.

My worldview is shaken to the core.

Next thing you know, someone is going to tell me their favorite song from El Hazard isn't "Boys Be Free"

The whole world has gone mad.

If they removed all the wierd gravitation mechanics, phlogiston, crystal spheres, and Giff, I'd be interested. The idea of magic flying ships in space is cool, with illithid attacks and space pirates and such. If you wanted to have your world set in a realspace universe, Spelljammer killed that idea.

Surely someone's got a 3e conversion of Giff & Hamsters (hee. that sounds like a novelty breakfast of some sort) that can be added to this new Spelljammer? I'm fine with losing the spheres & phlog (and redesigning the power system would be good too) because they just complicated things. But Giff & Hamsters were half the fun!
