d20 Star Wars Saga Edition news from Gen Con?

Mordin,

Thanks for the info. I am one of those who has never played nor bought any SW RPG, but am interested in the SW universe. I have frequently almost bought one or more of the books. Now that I see a new system is coming out, and some of the things that you say in your post about the mechanics, I am likely to buy the new edition. If for no other reason than to see how somethings are handled.

For everyone else (since I know that Mordin couldn't possiblly answer):

I hate to be the one to mention it, but could some of the changed here be reflective of 4e mechanics? Collapsed Skills and new HP system especially.

One post from Rodney, and I already want to have his frickin' man-babies. (Old forum joke.)

Thanks, Moridin. Sounds like something I'm definitely interested in again. Just reading that, I already know one player in my group who will be picking this up as fast as WotC can get it out.

Dude, that sounds sweet. I always thought the SWRPG's weakest aspect was the force system. I'm especially excited to find out how this "force sensitive" thing works. Hopefully there'll be something of an innate midichlorian level. As much as it offends the American sense of "all men created equal", Lucas' universe has varying degrees of force-y-ness, so the game should reflect that.

Moridin, I don't suppose you can tell us anything? Is there anything in the game system to reflect the strength of the force in a character other than the old "Skywalker or not Skywalker" scale?

Hey, I'll give it a shot. Though I liked the first d20 version I wasn't entirely convinced by it, especially when it came to Jedis and the Force. It seemed to me that there really was no real and/or logical reason to play anything but a Jedi because they were so much overpowered than the rest of the classes. The few teasers so far seem interesting to me, and Rodney's email gives me a good feeling that this time around the system was designed to mesh a lot more with the story. So count me in the "Interested" camp for Saga edition.

Well, it sure sounds like there'll be some sort of Occupation or Background system in SWS, a la d20 Modern. There's also an indication I might be right about the Jedi classes. But, unless my theory wasn't proposed on Moridin's forums (unlikely, since it seems obvious), it is wrong.

I suppose, if there is a Background system, there might be a Heritage of the Force background, and a feat Strong in the Force (chosen at 1st level), both of which would provide a bonus to Use the Force. A Skywalker would have both the feat and the background. Some other characters may have one or the other. The remaining force users may not have any of those.

Of course, there should be good reasons not to choose those options for player characters to keep them from creating the next Anakin...

Thanks for the additional information Rodney. I find it most encouraging that it is (apparently) a complete re-think, and it already sounds like you are hitting all the things that I've had issues with in the game.

'course, if you'd like any UK-based playtesters ;)

Cheers

I know this doesn't satiate you entirely, but I must admit the fervor with which many of you have responded (and basing decisions on almost no information) is startling. When the game comes out, if you look at it and don't like it, I won't think ill of you. If, however, you write the book off based on an hour and a half seminar during which almost nothing was revealed, well, then I think you may want to reevaluate the way you evaluate a game.

I guess I'm just asking for a little patience, and a little faith.

Ain't that the truth?

It never ceases to amaze me, the willingness of some people to come to firmly held and argued positions on the basis of almost no information at all, and the venom that is sometimes spouted!

I rather enjoy the gradual trickle of information - it really helped to build excitement over the initial 3e release, and I hope there will be a similar gradual trickle of information relating to SWS (Star Wars Saga) over the coming months!

Cheers

Even though I'm not a big fan of the changes we've heard so far, I trust Owen and Rodney with this. They KNOW Star Wars.

I may love the Tech Specialist and Fringer classes, but I know I'm in the minority of that...and I'm more than willing to see what these guys do with the rules. Same goes with VP/WP and the way the Force works now...I love em, but I'm open to seeing how this is done.

Just as long as I can easily use the UAA with it, I'll be happy. That's the first hurdle that have to be jumped in order to get me to buy into the Saga Edition.

So far, Rodney has me intrigued. I'd love to help playtest this sucker! (hint, hint, nudge, nudge... :D )
