D20 Superheroes

Cool. Another OGL-based products.

But do I read this right? You're going to develop an entirely different rules system and make it OGC via the OGL?

OGL

Not really in the sense that you are thinking. It is a reworking of the D20 system. I am integrating many of the optional rules from the DM's guide and a Super game required almost a whole reworking of the system. The most difficult aspect was combat and how to handle it. As I said above, how do you handle combat in a leveless D20 system, well, how do you handle it in any other system that is leveless? Der, skills. What about damage? That was the snag I hit upon, but it hit me and everything started falling into place. Fortitude save became a soak check, more like a damage resistance check.

I personally think the idea of the OGL is awesome and really helps the RPG business. By providing another set of OGL rules that are simple, easy to use and fast paced I hope to expand the RPG market. By basing it on the D20 system it also expands and adds to the D20 system.

All the basic things from DnD will be there, with the exception of Classes and levels. Hit points are modified and the combat system is modified to reflect necessary changes made to accomplish that cinematic and high energy effect of comic books.

What I need to know though is what do Superhero fans wish to see in a superhero game?

This fan feels no need or interest in a D20 Superhero game...Hero System 5E is out and that covers everything that is needed in a superhero game...(This is of course my opinion)

Well, the trouble is also there will be a lot of them in the near future. There's already The Foundation, the revised rules of which aren't bad (the setting is goofy, though). Then there's Mutants and Masterminds from GR, and Silver Age Sentinels d20 from Guardians of Order, and a game from this place.

Personally, I'm planning on getting Silver Age Sentinels - probably the d20, though the original system looks better (but d20 has more cross over potential)

Initially we will provide rules for Urban (Bat-man or Spiderman), Global (Starman or other second tier type heroes) and COsmic level (Superman). A future sourcebook will detail sidekick level play.

This is IMHO a major mistake the thing with 'Superheores is that Batman CAN compete with Superman, Karate Kid was able to 'fight' superman to a standoff because of his incredible (but still normal) martial arts ability). There should not be three different 'sets' for types of characters ALL of them should be able to join the Justice League and contribute equally.

As I said earlier it is a complete overhaul of the D20 system, so quite a few things have changed. The base attack bonus is now based on Dexterity.
As there are no levels to advance this attack bonus a new skill called brawl is being implemented. You simply purchase ranks in it and increase your BAB or improvements to your dexterity etc.

Very good and the way all BAb should be handled (even in DnD IMHO) However will there be different skills required for weapon use (Cabals guns, Hawkeyes Archery?) and what about the BAb on Optic Blasts or Earthquakes (as be Shockwave Seismic blast)

CHaracter creation will be purchase based using starting character points as opposed to rolling dice.

Oh so its D20 Gurps

We are working on an idea for templates so that you can play aliens and archetypal characters. The would be power and skill packages at a reduced cost in the character creation process. As I said templates will include alien races (three initially) and archetypal character types like Urban Legend, Patriotic Hero, Brick, Robot and Mutant.

What Class templates in a Classless sytem!!!:) (joking good idea actually) But why three Alien races? Isn't the customisable 'Alien template' sufficient

(or do you intend modelling Krytonians, Skree, Watchers, Martian Manhunter, Venom, Smoo, Cyber, Lobo, Mork etc etc etc

Well, Tonguey, the rules are not yet set for character creation s we won't begin full out playtesting for another month. I wanted to include rules for various levels because Robin is not up to snuff with Batty and Batty doesn't have the power of SUpes. The New Mutants have nothing on the X-Men and they have nothing on the Avengers. But hey, the New Green Arrow (COnner Hawk) was a weakling compared to the other JLA members I would say Urban level, and he contributed.

The rules I mentioned though reflect the level of knockback etc, not necessarily Character Creation. WHen Bat-man punches someone they don't fly two million feet back Definitely not when RObin does it either.

There will be only a few skills to cover weapons: FIrearms, Archery, Melee, Brawling, Thrown. I may be missing one. Powers like Optic Blasts will be treated like Energy Blast and you decide where the power generates from. This will help allow max customization. You purcase level of dice in the power. The BAB with these powers is based on a managing skill that will cover. This will work like the Knowledge and craft skills.

I was thinking more along the line of D20 Hero SYstem myself. LOL.

The Alien Races are examples and by no means the only way to do it. The templates are skills packages for the most part with an occasional power boost at the cost of something else. These ae extremely generic templates that we have in mind. The templates give you certain powers which results in a cheaper cost for certain things but with the bonuses you have to take the disadvantages. The idea is to model various rcaes from comic books. I have a Skrull like template in mind, a Kryptonian and an original template. Of course they won't e called those things. LOL.

I hope all the games coming out have success...But the Hero System gives me EVERYTHING I need, to do ANYTHING in the super-hero genre.

Hey, to each his own.:D

(You're lucky to have the time to even learn Champions, much less play it.)

And don't forget another d20 Supers game that's already out: Vigilance is available at RPGNow and looks very good. (It's class and level-based.)

Godlike is a superhero game with OGC rules (penned by Mike Mearls, no less) in the appendix. I haven't got the book, yet, so I can't say how good the rules are, but the little I've heard makes me optimistic .

Dennis Detwiller said about a week ago that he was planning to post the whole OGC rules set on the Godlike web site in a couple of weeks. It could be a good idea to take a peak, in case there is something there that you find interesting.

And when you do, feel free to drop by the new Godlike forum to tell us what you think. :)
